New Windows Mobile 6.1 interface?

Say what you will about it, but Windows Mobile is one of the world’s most popular and powerful mobile platforms. Microsoft appears poised to continue their tradition of excellence with a brand new Windows Mobile interface. Windows Mobile 6.1, which will reportedly be announced next February, will sport a completely re-hashed interface, sporting a carousel-like menu system that should provide easy and convenient one-click access to a plethora of commonly used functions. The new interface will be similar to, but not identical to, the current Vodafone Palm 500v interface. According to WMExperts, the new interface is based on the following bit of marketing hogwash: "The idea is that instead of thinking in terms of "applications," you can think in terms of "what do I want to do today?" Okay. Other functional improvements include more reliable Wi-Fi communication, better Exchange integration, and enhanced Bluetooth support. Sound good? Yeah, we think so too.

Just to be clear - that particular bit of “marketing hogwash” is my own, not necessarily that of Microsoft (for this software, anyway). :)

You gotta look around the internets. I’ve seen the WM6 update for the Blackjack (along with updates for the 8125 & 8525). Just gotta take the time and follow the instructions.

I just wish that they learn from the iPhone and add some flash and usability to the interface of BOTH Pocket PC and Smartphone.

Well that looks good but the stability has always been a problem. But the look is much improved compared to the current WM which looks horrible.

Any new wimo update needs to be met with speculation. As you have mention the iPhone is something learn from but it should only be that. WiMo should be released with flash or wake3 installed and developed to give more use to what is already there.

Dude - cut the bull. I’ve been using WM since the early versions and it is way, way better than anything else including Blackberry which I had to use for work for some time.

The only real complaint is boot time but then I only shut my phone off when I get on a plane (shh, and then sometimes I only shut off the radio).

Btw, if you aren’t already, try a phone from HTC. I love their phones - I’ve had at least 6 of them over the last few years. They are slick and work well.

I have HTC Home, fTouchFLO and the TouchCube installed on my JASJAM and it looks great and function well. Still would love to try this out when it becomes available. Like fashion, I like to be able to change the user interface every now and then.

I like my Tilt with WM6 and this looks to be one of those upgrades that I’d like to have more than WM6 on my Blackjack.

I’m not going to run a leaked ROM. Period. No matter how great everyone says it is. I’m well aware of the deficiencies with it and given the problems vs the benefit (to me,) I’d rather hold out for an official release. But given that it’s taken them this long, I’m doubtful that at&t will release it at all.

But regardless, I’ll likely hold on to this phone until iPhone with 3.5G or a phone w/ Nokia’s S60 touch UI materializes, or if HTC releases something worthwhile in that time frame (a slim phone w/ Kaiser specs, yummy!)

There was a project by a national provider to provide exactly this feature of a carousel interface. Some who saw the application prototypes found it intuitive and much easier to navigate. Detailed requirements and functional specifications were prepared by the manufacturer and prototype handsets designed to work with the application were built. However the provider was acquired and at this point, not sure if the project is still a go.
