MapQuest launches new beta site

Despite its market dominance, MapQuest has lagged behind competitors like Google Maps and MSN Maps in terms of features and services. In an attempt to gain some lost ground, MapQuest has unveiled a brand new beta version of their popular mapping software. The new version is built on an AJAX foundation, sporting all sorts of Web 2.0 compatibility. The interface is pretty slick and provides a user experience on par with our current favorite, Google Maps. There are also a couple of nice little additions, including a recent / saved search dialog box, expanding sidebars, and much more. All in all, it’s a welcome upgrade to an aging service, though we can’t say we didn’t miss Google’s satellite  / street view options.

I agree man. Google has really taken over the Maps scene…MapQuest needs to get it together in a major way.

I just gave this a quick test drive, and though its pretty cool and a nice upgrade over the current mapquest, I dont think its quite “on par” with Google maps. Some of the google maps features I enjoy that I didnt see right off the bat w beta mapquest included ability to click and drag and make an alternative route, or click a destination and make it a default, and I am sure more……just my 2 cents
