TELUS launches HTC Touch and HTC S640

Today is a big day for our friends up North. Canadian telecommunications company TELUS has announced not one, but two brand new HTC devices for use on their mobile network. First up the HTC Touch, This is the same phone that we all know, and today’s announcement marks the first official arrival of the device on North American soil. Sporting Ev-DO connectivity, this hanseat comes complete with HTC’s TouchFLO interface, which is a pleasant shell for the Windows Mobile 6 OS. Next up is the HTC S640, which is like of hybrid between the Motorola Q9 and the new Palm Centro. Not the most attractive device, but new phones are always good, right? Plus it’s always nice when we get a heads up, too! Both devices will retail for $149.99 with a 3 year contract, $399.99 with a 2 year stint, $449.99 for 1 year, and $499 outright.

Thanks, Jean-Phillippe!

The folks up north are really lucky getting the hot new toys to play with while we wait for AT&T to get off their butts. Well enjoy folks.

Even though the author doesn’t find the S640 as being attractive, I sure do! I honestly think I would walk into a store and buy one this weekend if it were available here. It looks like a professional Centro. What’s up with the 3-yr contracts up there? I don’t like the fact that 2-yr deals have become the latest fad here in the States.

Does Telus have better data prices? Canada has the worst data prices, too bad too because they are starting to get all the good devices but they have to watch how much data they use.

Wireless data of Telus is very expensive, but all carrier in canada are same thing for data and mobile device.

No wifi on the Touch, so it looks like the Sprint version will be wifi-less too.

Galvatron, maybe the look but not the same hardware. Camera of the s640 is 2.0 vs Centro 1.3 mega pixels. The s640 have also a WiFi connection and Centro nothing:) For finish Windows Mobile vs Palm OS , it’s a choice, but for me, i chose Windows Mobile:)

It’s true that the Big 3 providers in Canada all try to hose the consumer. BUT Virgin Mobile Canada just introduced a $10/mo. *unlimited* data plan. The only catch is you have to use their new Samsung m510 phone, but that costs only $199 with NO contract.

I bought the HTC S640 and I’m like’n but there are a few things as always..I’m a lefty so when I’m holding the device as to talk on the phone my finger is directly over the HANG-UP button! Whoops “Sorry did I hang up on you?”. There’s no flash player built-in to the web browser so forget about looking at youtube videos (looking for a fix now). TXT’ing is SWEET on this device. Autocomplete works like a dream! I’m NOT fond of the black plastic material, had the device for a day and already oily fingers have dominated. The device doesn’t have a standard headphone jack you MUST use the headphones that come with the device!! (grounds for divorce right there) :(
It’s the best cell/pda I’ve seen on the market thus far that offers wifi/bluetooth but still doesn’t stand up to my iPAQ but it’s moving in the right direction :)

Hi, I’ll probably be getting this phone from Telus this week, it’s on now for $0 if your plan is $45 a month or more so I’m gonna go for it.
I was just a little curious about these data plans(I’m new to cell phones, especially browsing the web on them).
Most of them are something like $15 for a few MB of data, and some crazy price like $10 a MB after that. Isn’t this ridiculously over priced? I mean, in a day of casual browsing I’m sure I could go over 50 MB on a pc, are web pages that much smaller on these phones? What about videos? One Youtube video would be somewhere between 5 and 20MB.
This is why I was really happy to see wi-fi on this phone, so I could use my schools internet free of charge.

Anyway, that’s all for now, I’ll put up a review if this is the phone I get in a couple weeks.

    Thanks.
