Want an iPhone? You’re going to have to wait for 1.1.1

Well, see, here’s the thing…we’ve been informed that all current shipments of iPhones to AT&T stores have been halted. This is to ensure that every iPhone contains the 1.1.1 firmware. Besides normally upgrading the units, which is totally par for the course, they’ve noticed a tremendous amount of people purchasing iPhones in order unlock them and resell (duh!). In order to cut this down, the maximum number of units you’re allowed to buy at a time has been lowered to three from five. The estimated time frame for iPhone restockage at AT&T stores is later this month. If you want that precious 1.02, you might have to scramble around, yet 1.1.1 is jailbreaked and SIM unlockable, so we’re not sure why you’d want to…

So, correct me if I’m wrong, but the point of lowering the price of the iPhone $200 dollars was to increase sales for the holiday quarter. How does refusing to sell them fit into that plan? To drive up demand?

So you don’t get a subsidized phone which is the excuse a carrier has for the ETF you pay. You cannot unlock your phone as approved by the Library of Congress oh and since you are all 3 year olds we will only sell you 3 at a time.

This is why I will not buy the iPhone but a different phone. The ETF part on any other phone is legit (to a point) but on the iPhone where you pay the full boat, that’s just crap.

But who cares? Just today the availability of a SIM unlock for 1.1.1 has been hitting the blogs. Jailbreak, tools, and SIM unlock live… at least until Apple and AT&T can retrieve their heads from their posteriors.

So lets review what Apple has done very recently: 1. Significantly reduced price of both models of iPhone and now 2. “halting sales of current lineup to ensure correct software.”
Guess what folks, these are not mere coincidences. New product(s) are on the way to replace your tired and edge-enabled iPaperweights by time black friday rolls around.
Don’t be fooled by Cupertinos’ propaganda department.

foner, you are clueless. the price drop was to keep the sales numbers up through the holidays and they stopped selling the 1.0.2 units to cut down on the unlocking. There’s not always a conspiracy.

I’m guessing it will be march-may of next year for the 3G iphones. Don’t want to piss off all the holiday buyers. although they could put out a stripped down ipod/phone before then.

Gal, not a bad idea but then you still have to answer to the carrier, they have a good deal with ATT. I’m sure they have both profited from this venture.

Dude, there’s conspiracy and then there’s just plain business sense. If apple has an iPod for just about everyone out there, wouldn’t it make sense to follow up with an iphone for various needs?
You really need to pay attention to trends in the wireless industry if you plan on speaking with such authority. Just fyi - the iPhone was in development for nearly 3 years. New handsets dont just sprout out of the ground, they are carefully cultivated and released at strategic times, the same can be said for unheard of discounts.

What idiot would go to an att store where you only get customer service if you mention iPhone and just spend like $1500 on phones that you’ll probably only make somewhere between $100-500?
Besides having an “unlimited” supply of iPhones at my att store, they seem to have nilch customer service and absolutely no communication skills thus meaning they had my Tilt this morning, since nobody communicates around there, they sold it to some yahoo that’s probably gonna treat it like crap. Way to go att you’ve satisfied another one of your current customers once again.
    Fucking retards.

foner I think you need a little apple education before you speak with such authority. They are obsessed with control over their products, they release fewer models so their are fewer variables in the mix. They might have a lesser model coming out but with all of Europe getting a non-3G model, i hardly see them pissing off their US customers by releasing a 3G model before next year.

    That doesn’t really make sense.

Apple re locking them. Must not be in the original plan. There has to be one big reason why they are doing this. Maybe the deal was to bring customers to at&t but because people are unlocking at&t will probably lose customers.

JeffB–hold off on that Tilt. I just bought one and played with it a bit this evening. Believe me, Windows Mobile is a joke compared to the elegance of both the iPhone and Blackberry, for that matter. The Tilt’s going back tomorrow. Ugh.

    Antonio,
My Tilt rules. It’s a little heavy but that doesn’t matter because everything that’s packed into it is just amazing and I wouldn’t get anything else att offers.
(mainly because most of it is crap)
