China blocks RSS feeds

Seriously, we’re not kidding. In a move that’s sure to spark the ire of freedom lovers everywhere, the Chinese government has moved to block all RSS content. They have a long standing censorship policy, heavily regulating the content that is available to the Chinese population. Up until now, however, RSS feeds have gone relatively unchecked, giving users access to content that would have previously been inaccessible in its fully syndicated format. No longer, though. China has managed to block and and all RSS information from reaching users inside the country. What’s next, China? Big Macs? Please no, not that!

thanks for the travel lesson but alot of the criticism over lack of freedoms in China I think are a little overblown. I have many friends who go for work and see a very westernized country. No they are not free but neither are we. They are run by a group from the Communist party, we are run by a group of people bought and paid for by special interests. No one is free.

and yes anyone or anything to rid the world of gal’s posts I’m all for.

Dtest5477, I’ll deal with Galvatron’s bad spelling anyday over your complaining.

anyway.. the only thing that surprised me about this story is that it was allowed to go on as long as it did. I would think they would have blocked this before they even knew what they were missing.

It seems like they are really going about there censorship backwards, you would think they would block everything to begin with then decide what they think is appropriate rather then limiting things after the fact.

Dtest, you’re a fool and a cretin if you try to draw broad-reaching equivalencies between communist China and the US. When was the last time a critic of the US Government was sent to prison for being vocally opposed to its policies? Or when was the last time the US used tanks to subdue a student protest? Or told anyone how many children they could produce? How often does the US goverment openly remove certain web sites and media outlets that don’t follow the letter of the law when it comes to the state-endorsed censorship rules? Wait, which state-endorsed censorship rules are those again?

If you can’t tell the difference, you should try going to Beijing and wearing a “Mao Tse-tung Sucks” T-shirt on the streets for a day. If you make it that long, report back with an RSS feed and let us know… Uh, make that an e-mail. Scratch that, just give us a call. Hmm…

Dtest, some things in China are Westernized but this is just the surface. The irony of China is that it is a Communist dictatorship where people are free to make money the capitalist way. In fact, the Govt wants its people to stick to making money and stay out of politics or getting fancy ideas about freedom of information. As a resident of China I can tell you that this place will drive anyone used to free access to information crazy. The people here are generally brainwashed because they don’t have access to the truth. Count your blessings that you live in a country where you can say what you please and read anything you care to.
