Lights Camera Action: T-Mobile’s BlackBerry Curve 8320 Launch Breakfast
A couple weeks ago, your faithful friends at BGR brought you the news of T-Mobile’s BlackBerry Curve Breakfast Tour making it’s rounds across America. To follow up on that post, we decided to bring you an exclusive recap from one of the breakfasts.
I cannot personally vouch for the other events, but I will say that T-Mobile and RIM picked an absolutely great venue to introduce the device to the city of Atlanta (post-launch, of course) – a club now named Opera. The storied history of this venue dates back to Peter Gatien, famed owner of the Limelight nightclubs, opening up a club named Petra after moving Limelight to New York (Disco Bloodbath, Party Monster, the Club Kids, etc.) from Atlanta. It was a former 1920’s opera house, hence the recently remodeled club interior and new name (formerly eleven50). Hit the jump for the rest!
Breakfast was better than most of these events. In addition to the standard orange juice, coffee, and bagels, they also had a few different types of danishes, a mound of various fruits, and a few different types of breads. Unfortunately, the bars were dry to the audience, otherwise I would have been sipping on a Tequila Sunrise.
A representative from RIM spoke to the attendees, giving some marketing information about the BlackBerry 8320 and the UMA technology. A video was shown followed by a brief marketing spill from a T-Mobile representative. The small Vendor Showcase housed Chalk Media and my buddies at Wallace Wireless. I can speak very highly of both these vendors in each of their respective market spaces (mobile media content delivery and business continuity planning) and would definitely recommend both to anyone looking for these solutions.
T-Mobile had three booths set up across the venue - one for the BlackBerry 8320, one for the BlackBerry Pearl and it’s new colors, and one for Wi-Fi and UMA (T-Mobile’s Hot Spot @ Home). This last booth was occupied by none other than T-Mobile and VoiceStream all-star, Terence "TC" Caston. For those who have not heard of this legendary figure in the wireless arena, he has played a key role in T-Mobile’s adoption, testing and deployment of mobile devices lines, such as BlackBerry, Palm and Windows Mobile, in addition to the transport technologies, such as EDGE, UMTS, and UMA.
T-Mobile and RIM kept their presentations short and to the point, as to not venture into the realm of boredom. While you were encouraged to stay and network and learn more about the T-Mobile and ISV products, unlike other carrier launch events, you were not forced to remain at the venue for an hour (or two or three) in order to receive your free BlackBerry device. We were able to walk out within 30-45 minutes (we’re already familiar with both Chalk and Wallace Wireless) and received the new BlackBerry 8320 without any delays.
Kudos to T-Mobile for a super sharp and classy breakfast event!

Thanks for showing us what I missed out on… they still should’ve come to Chicago. =(
I wish they were in Chicago too.
How to get free blackberry?
life must be sweet that u just show up at a place with free danishes and O.J and 30mins later u walk out with a BB8320
so when does someone when the curve? still no announced winner yet
Will you be giving away this one as well? I would love to replace my cracked (literally) 8700.
btw: did they mention anything about “video recording” since it has the same camera that is in the Verizon Pearl2? (After all, it WAS called “Lights, Camera, Action”)
I worked as the sound engineer there when it was eleven50. I always liked the opera house thing. I really wanted the boiler’s door in the basement, dated 1918, but the damn thing weighed like 200 lbs.
was this event different than the one that they had for the tmobile reps? i know that they also had one later that night at the same venue.
Heh we never get anything like that down here in the pheonix metro area.
Hey Jibi,
Thanks so much for passing on this very interesting information. Really appreciate all your efforts to keep us informed on all things BlackBerry.
CB
Yeah- us down here in Phoenix don’t get anything like this because there’s ni big corporate accounts here. What major corps are based here that all hand their employees a new berry when they get hired? Not many. But holla at me Galvatron if you wanna talk phones- there aren’t many of us here on the P H X.
unfortunately, no vid capture…but it DOES have vid playback when uploaded
@zyphbear, as of the current OS, it doesn’t. I have not heard of any plans for them offering video capture on the 8300 series devices (8300, 8310, 8320) even when moving up to OS 4.3.x. To be honest, I’m not sure if it’s actually the same camera, although one would think that they would be able to capture what’s being displayed on the screen.
As for giving it away, BG was doing the first giveaway. This particular 8320 is already spoken for …gotta keep the girlfriend happy, right?
I was at the party! It was nice, and the food and drinks was nice. Also, they had where you could have any smoothie made!
Anyway, getting a free Curve was really priceless…
Yep. The ATL event was nice and painless. We were actually standing around in awe that they didn’t try and spend 2 hours talking, bur rather, what, 15 minutes if that? The night event was actually the night before. Was a pretty nice event as well. Only 5 8320’s if I remember right were given away, but 15-20 pearls were. DJ 2nd nature dj’d the event, and then the dj from outkast got up there for a bit. Did the night winners walk out with 2 months of free service as well oe was it just the devices with the BT headsets?
anyone know when it will be available on CDMA?
That takes me back. I remember them working on eleven50, it was originally going to be named stark. They were looking at all sorts of weird shit like putting in a hypercolor wall.
was the wifi vs edge on the curve ever resolved? or curve on edge is really better than curve on wifi?
Yeah, Devin and I were always talking, though I got the feeling that he never could remember my name. I mean, we worked together like three times a month, and he always gave me that, “who the hell are you” look. Damien, who came maybe twice a season, greeted me personally every time. Hell, even Chris and Mike from Hybrid remembered me when I saw them in Miami.
why ca’t i be a phone nerd and get invited to these places where they give these puppies out for free…here i am paying 249 for it…sigh.
yes we do get stuff like this in phx…we have our launch party this coming monday in scottsdale at sky bar and we had one for the pearl as well as the 8700
If you think TC is smooth in the booth, you should see him on the golf course. I played with him WES ‘06 and he hit his own golf cart twice, two houses and almost hit us a few times. It was one of the best rounds of golf I have played….laughed all 13 holes that he played. (He showed up on 3 and left after 16)
