Sidekick LX Unboxing / hands-on!
So we (us and Engadget Mobile) leaked the first rendering concepts of the Sidekick LX, BGR also leaked the first live picture of the Sidekick LX, and it would only seem fit that we’re the first to have the device in hand, right? Well, good, because we got one, and we’re loving it! Now to be fair, the actual specs of the Sidekick LX have not drastically improved from the Sidekick 3, and a lot of naysayers have been ripping it a new you-know-what, but you really just have to use one yourself to appreciate it. It is definitely thinner and feels right when your typing, IMing, or MMSing on it. The speaker is ridiculously loud and clear, and the screen…wow. It’s just like the Sidekick Slide, except a whole lot bigger. The back of the device has a rubberized textured finish, and the full QWERTY keyboard is a pleasure to bang out emails. There are subtle improvements in the OS, but to be quite honest, that’s what makes the Sidekick a Sidekick and we didn’t expect too many changes. We’d have liked Wi-Fi to take advantage of T-Mobile’s Hotspot@Home service, or the inclusion of a 3G radio (even though T-Mobile looks to be shafted in this area by the US Government) but those are where the negatives end. If you’re a Sidekick user already, or are looking for something a little more fun, and dare we day "social", you’ll be right at home with the Sidekick LX or Sidekick Slide. Head on over to our full gallery to check out the whole phone!
UPDATE: A couple early findings from our Sidekick LX…all ringtones, games, and applications do not transfer over from a Sidekick 3. This mean you’ll need to repurchase everything again. There is a chance this might change as the device is not publicly available, but we doubt it. Also, at this point in time, the Sidekick LX’s Catalog is heavily lacking content…whether developers won’t need to, or haven’t recompiled the apps and games yet, there is only a short few available things to purchase currently in the Application and Games folders.

recon,
thanks. i’ll check with Starhub.

@Tia
Dont know about the LX but the SK3s allowed for this however, this feature is locked by the carrier (T-Mobile). It cannot be unlocked unless you are a developer.

As a long-time Sidekick user (since B&W), i must say that I disappointed that there is no UMA/hotspot in the LX. That would make the no-3G thing very easy to accept. bummed

LOL at you fools falling for this crappy piece of hardwarae again. The sidekick should only be acceptable to people under the age of 16. Its a childish phone, and the scant features reflect this. Sidekicks are dumb, grow up kiddies. Get a Wing, Dash, or a Blackberry. Something professional…

I like the device better than the 3, but the features are lacking. This phone would have been ahead of it’s time if it was a year and a half ago. I am happy about the headphone jack that plugs right into my car stero adapter so I can play all my music from my SDK in my car. The LX also supports multiple file formats rather than just mp3. Overall appearance looks much nicer, and classier. This device does not look like a toyphone like past models. All of my friends think it’s a Blackberry or Iphone when they first see it. Such a bummer that there is no wi-fi, no video playback, a crappy camera that claims it’s 1.3 mp but looks worse than my first camera phone I had 4 years ago. Bummed that they still do not allow you to create your own ringtones, and you have to do rocket science on it to create a custom theme/background. No GPS is lame, which means no googlemaps. Myspace mobile kinda blows, hoping that it improves with updates. I just don’t get why Danger doesn’t up their game and add the features above… if they did, they would be the creater of the world’s best smartphone.

The Sidekick LX is my first Sidekick phone, and I am really bummed that it does not play video’s. It does everything else, so why not video’s?
A few things I notice is, if Sharp makes this thing stereo blu-tooth, adds video feature to this LCD screen and improves the picture quality to at least 2.0, then this phone would be the best phone on the market. As far as the comment about this phone being for 16 year olds and to grow up, I’d have to say whoever said that “GET A LIFE” this phone is very professional in appearance and it is thin and fits well in the pocket.
I wished this thing had Windows Mobile 6.0 though, because then I could create my own ringtones and play movies on it.
