Sidekick LX Unboxing / hands-on!
So we (us and Engadget Mobile) leaked the first rendering concepts of the Sidekick LX, BGR also leaked the first live picture of the Sidekick LX, and it would only seem fit that we’re the first to have the device in hand, right? Well, good, because we got one, and we’re loving it! Now to be fair, the actual specs of the Sidekick LX have not drastically improved from the Sidekick 3, and a lot of naysayers have been ripping it a new you-know-what, but you really just have to use one yourself to appreciate it. It is definitely thinner and feels right when your typing, IMing, or MMSing on it. The speaker is ridiculously loud and clear, and the screen…wow. It’s just like the Sidekick Slide, except a whole lot bigger. The back of the device has a rubberized textured finish, and the full QWERTY keyboard is a pleasure to bang out emails. There are subtle improvements in the OS, but to be quite honest, that’s what makes the Sidekick a Sidekick and we didn’t expect too many changes. We’d have liked Wi-Fi to take advantage of T-Mobile’s Hotspot@Home service, or the inclusion of a 3G radio (even though T-Mobile looks to be shafted in this area by the US Government) but those are where the negatives end. If you’re a Sidekick user already, or are looking for something a little more fun, and dare we day "social", you’ll be right at home with the Sidekick LX or Sidekick Slide. Head on over to our full gallery to check out the whole phone!
UPDATE: A couple early findings from our Sidekick LX…all ringtones, games, and applications do not transfer over from a Sidekick 3. This mean you’ll need to repurchase everything again. There is a chance this might change as the device is not publicly available, but we doubt it. Also, at this point in time, the Sidekick LX’s Catalog is heavily lacking content…whether developers won’t need to, or haven’t recompiled the apps and games yet, there is only a short few available things to purchase currently in the Application and Games folders.

I do like the square screen better
there is a typo in ‘dare we day “social”‘. Shouldn’t this say: ‘dare we say “social”‘?
Just pointing it out before someone rips you a new one for this. (Not my intention)
The guys at poweredbydanger.com have been posting pics and videos since last week of some of the features.
does it still feel cheap? thats the thing that bothered me about the sidekick3. it felt so cheap and breakable.
What is the screen size? Does it play videos?
Forgive me if this a dumb question…but Does this thing play videos? and if not……what’s the big deal? Just wondering
NOT an unboxing. And repeating pictures over and over again. Wow! talk about sinking to a new low. Better off viewing Engadget.
Man this phone is awesome I need one bgr hire me so I can move to the states and get my hands on of of these little jewels
BGR HOW ABOUT A VIDEO REVIEW!!!! PLEASE. . . WHAT ABOUT PICS OF THE BROWN ONE???. . .LOL. . SORRY NOT TRYNA BE DEMANDING BUT. . .YEA. . PLEASE. .
BGR,
How much will the LX cost without a contract?
Thx guys,
MJ
To answer your questions. No it doesn’t play video, but the os is built to POSSIBLY allow this in the future. Its supposed to be 300 with a 2 year contract, if I’m not mistaken.
That’s awesomeness in a Sidekick.
Yea the video feature is suppose to be released in an OTA update awhile after the review
it will cost $299
the Sidekick LX is the greatest mobile device… ever
the iphone is cool but the functionality of the sidekick >>> iphone
props to danger for making such a great mobile device
It looks nice but that keyboard kinda looks like shit. But hey any keyboard looks good after you’ve been stuck with the Blackjack’s for a few months.
*Dances around*
No, I seriously am, actually. Listening to the Fratellis makes me do that. The blue black looks okay but I wish they’d released them in black and white. The old keyboard *looks* a bit better but I think when you’re actually using it, the LXs would be the best.
Hurry up with the slide! Thanks :]
Whats the camera mp? video won’t be out for a while huh? micro sd or mini? still huge, stereo bluetooth? 300$ eh? sounds like Helio Ocean is still top dog! HELIO!!!! at least they finally got the clue with MMS support…..
where is google maps application?
If stuff won’t transfer from the SK3, I’m guessing I’m SOL with my SK2.
How’s the MP3 player this time around?
Dear SK owners,
Will the SK unit work only on T-mobile networks or is it possible I can bring it in foreign telcos and still enjoy the same features? i own a gsm-based BB and has a data plan with my telco here in the far east.
please advise SK experts.
BGR…
y’all need to put a video review!!!!
PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!
Knights,
the phone has 850/900/1800 and 1900 bands, and there are plans for europe release.
knights,
sorry to answer your question better, these are all the networks that work with Danger’s hiptop devices:
T-Mobile USA, T-Mobile UK, T-Mobile Germany, T-Mobile Austria, Telstra, SunCom, Fido, KPN, E-Plus, Edge Wireless, Cable&Wireless, and Starhub.
man, somebody’s an idiot (ayight, i shouldn’t be so harsh so i’ll say a fool) why did they(sharp, danger, or T-Mobile) go back the easily degradable rubber keypad. They plastic, clear keys on the SK3 were the best. I shouldn’t give judgment before owning one but the plastic keys was the best keyboard used. Now i’m gonna have to worry about the keys warping again like with my SK2.
bummer
