Blackberry Pearl 8130 officially announced with video recording
Waterloo-based and our best friends, Research In Motion, today announced the BlackBerry 8130 for CDMA carriers. This marks the first CDMA BlackBerry Pearl, delivered to market just over one year after the original launched on T-Mobile last Fall. The phone brings with it a host of upgrades, EV-DO high speed radio notwithstanding. The device sports a 3.5 mm headphone jack, built-in GPS (likely disabled on Verizon’s offering), the highly anticipated A2DP Bluetooth profile, and an overhauled interface complete with browser redesign and streaming video support. The media player gets playlist functionality, a feature requested by many a BlackBerry users across the globe. With the 2.0 megapixel camera that comes with video recording capabilities, it becomes the first BlackBerry for CDMA networks that offers digital photography and the first BlackBerry across the board that offers video capture and recording capabilities. All told, this is a suitable upgrade for handset that was getting a bit long in the tooth.

How is this battery life much worse? Obviously the standby time is lower by 6 days. But the talk time is actually better on the 8130 (3.5 hours = 210 mins).

The difference is batterly life is for two reasons…..
1. the phone has EVDO compared to edge = more battery drain on EVDO.
2. CDMA technology (Verizon/Sprint) has more of a battery drain than the GSM Technology (at&t/tmobile), this is true with any phone.

Yeah because everyone just lets there BB sit on their bed for 15 days….gimme a break.
The talk times are exactly the same. That is what counts

will it be a world phone for verizon like the 8830?

I guess one good thing about being on CDMA is that we get the updated model with new features, while GSM is forced to be the guinea pig.

I bet VZW drops the ball on this just like they did with the 8830, no gps no navigator, why they do this who knows, but I will take evdo, and “the network” anyday over edge and spotty gsm coverage in nyc, also love using my berry constanly on the train without waiting to clear the tunnel.

I can’t wait! I think the blackberry will be a great improvement in sprints lineup.

I dont get how GSM is the guinea pig here? Usually Guinea pigs are the ones tested on, so no other harm comes to other animals right? Thats where the saying comes from? Verizon is the first to have a Pearl 2 with the new 4.3 OS. So THEY will be the ones being tested, and the ones to get the bugs first. When 4.3 upgrade goes to the current Curve and Pearls, it is the Verizon Pearl 2 that will be the one finding the bugs for the other versions. That being said, I can’t wait until 4.3 comes out for the 8310 so we get the same capabilities.
The difference is, you Verizon people will get GPS disabled, forced to use VZNavigator. Us AT&T people will have open GPS so we can use the wealth of GPS apps for BlackBerry.

VZW has gimped EVERY smartphone they have ever released. My Treo 650 was gimped. The 8830 was gimped, and this will be gimped also. VZW will continue to screw its customers and force them into paying THEIR services, removing THEIR choices, until someone buys them out and changes the policy.

yeah…
who’s got the jing to buy out Verizon?

let me know when you figure that one out…
(ok microsoft could but..why would they?)

I dont know who would buy them out, but I really don’t care. I’m not a sucker and don’t like getting screwed over so I dumped them after 3 years of service. They have a really good network, but AT&T is “good enough.” PLUS I am a gadget freak and love the latest goodies. Most gadget freaks should hate Verizon because their selection is crap, and what they do have is gimped.

some of us don’t have a choice…
I can get ALL my phone calls..(verizon)
or SOME of my phone calls (I have had sprint at&t and nextel before sprint got them)
NOBODY comes close to their coverage in MY area..
I stress WHERE I LIVE. Where you live the others may be fine…But after the three thousandth dropped call I smashed my sprint phone (think krypton exploding in the first superman or the death star at the end of star wars only LOUDER)
And now.. I put up with their “crippled UI”, and their shi**y phone selection…and all of my calls go through and I never miss one because of my network. Half my employees have “other” providers and they drop each other’s and everyone else’s calls all day long.
No I’m no verizon fanboy (my knees feel fine thank you) but I am a pragmatist and if i’m going kick up the sheckels for phone service it had better work…or why bother?
so I will wait…Patiently..for the good stuff to roll out to verizon (like the pearl) and I will rock out with my blackberry out and pay my high price phone bill and my expensive data plan…
can you hear me now??? good.

Exactly … There is no nationwide 3G networks on GSM in the US, so if you travel at all for business … the only serious choice is Verizon (their phone selection sucks compared to ATT, but I need to get my calls and email everywhere)

To Christopher Cox,
I am really laughing at your postings. First of all, have fun using GPS and other data services over your EDGE connection! I don’t even use VZW, but I will tell you that I would rather be the Guinea Pig with decent speeds then with the tested OS at archaic transmissions rates.
Being as how you are a, “Gadget Freak” you would think you would opt for a phone that has greater usability through faster speeds while giving you MUCH BETTER PHONE COVERAGE AREA.
Anyway Gadget Freak, have fun attempted to APPEAR productive with your less than dial up, EDGE, barely tapping into the phones real features while CDMA users get all of the features with usable service!!

daddybear & bossman,
There is absolutely no way the VZW has better coverage than Sprint!

First I don’t do web browsing on the unit. And 2nd, as a person that loves gadgets, I would love the freedom to use my devices how they were intended by the manufacturer. On a VZW device, you are all shoved in a corner with absolutely no choices because all features that give you options are certainly taken away, forcing you to use VZW stuff. On verizon, all of your choices as far as what software and service to use are made for you, and there is nothing you can do about it. Like infosync? Like google maps? Like BB411? Tough. You can’t use them because you are on verizon.

WHEN IS THE CURVE COMING TO VERIZON?
Heck. You can’t even USE the GPS until Verizon releases the VZ navigator service. People with 8830 units are still unable to use the GPS in their phones. Period.
