Blackberry Pearl 8130 officially announced with video recording

Waterloo-based and our best friends, Research In Motion, today announced the BlackBerry 8130 for CDMA carriers. This marks the first CDMA BlackBerry Pearl, delivered to market just over one year after the original launched on T-Mobile last Fall. The phone brings with it a host of upgrades, EV-DO high speed radio notwithstanding. The device sports a 3.5 mm headphone jack, built-in GPS (likely disabled on Verizon’s offering), the highly anticipated A2DP Bluetooth profile, and an overhauled interface complete with browser redesign and streaming video support. The media player gets playlist functionality, a feature requested by many a BlackBerry users across the globe. With the 2.0 megapixel camera that comes with video recording capabilities, it becomes the first BlackBerry for CDMA networks that offers digital photography and the first BlackBerry across the board that offers video capture and recording capabilities. All told, this is a suitable upgrade for handset that was getting a bit long in the tooth.

I don’t care if GPS is disabled on the VZW version, as long as we have acess to audible turn by turn navigation apps like VZ Navigator. This ought to be a great device to their line up.

This is the Pearl 2. You can tell by the buttons to the left and right of the trackball. The Pearl 2 has bigger buttons vertically than the 1st generation one.

From the feature set, it sounds like version 4.3 of the OS that is rumored to be out this year. Currently, all of the units have 4.2. There are rumors that the AT&T BlackBerry 8310 with GPS will have 4.3, but we won’t know until closer to release time. That is the one I am getting. I was going to get the curve a couple of months ago until I heard the 8310 was coming out … and I use GPS A LOT. So this is the unit for me.

I will take my Curve 8320 over the Pearl (1,2, or Komet) any day. (I hate the Pearl keyboard) I am just miffed that there is no video recording.

is there any way the curve could eventually be able to capture video?

I think the Curve will have video recording with a software update. (4.3) This is a feature that has nothing to do with the hardware. So not need to panic, just wait to all the 8300 8310 and 8320 owners.

According to http://www.blackberrypearl8130.com/, battery is way worse than Pearl 8100:

    -Pearl 8100:
    15 days standby time
    3.5 hrs talk time

    -Pearl 8130:
    9 days standby time
    220 minutes talk time

So, talk time remains the same but standby time has been slashed to nearly half? I hope it’s a mistake…

I read somewhere that when BB OS 4.3 comes out, we should be able to capture video on the Curve.
