AT&T and Verizon looking to break into India’s mobile market

The two leaders of the American wireless market have both independently expressed a desire to move into India’s rapidly emerging wireless melee. Sound like a good idea? We’d have to agree. Before you get too excited, though, it’s important to note that neither AT&T nor Verizon would enter the market on their own. AT&T is set to acquire a stake in Telecom Mahnidra, while Verizon would partner with Videocon. It will be interesting to see how these deals play out, and what the long term domestic implications prove to be. Cheaper roaming, anyone? Now, instead of your favorite company’s call center, it could be a mobile call center…OK, that was bad. Maf karo.

Well one thing at least, Verizon and At&T will learn how to operate in a free mobile market where devices can’t be tied down to their shitty service like here in the US. Nobody in India will care two hoots about such tied down service because people change cell phones and services as freely as babies changing diapers.

Maybe that will teach them how to open up a bit at home too. Time to relearn for them.

Forgot to add – the whole concept of locked devices is foreign in India. No phones are sold locked at all. Period. Every single phone will work on any network (as long as they support the same protocal – like GSM).

So both these giants have to learn to adapt to that model – and given the incentive of India’s vast mobile potential and the money in it, I bet they will learn fast.

Everyone wants a subsidized price on a handset or even a free phone, isn’t that were the idea of commitment came from?
