T-Mobile Shadow in the concrete jungle!
I guess you could sort of say we’re on a roll with the HTC Shadow…We won’t keep you in the dark much longer, though. (Sorry, had to!) Thanks to one of our readers, we just scored some photo snaps of T-Mobile’s Shadow device. It is, in fact, the HTC Juno / HTC Phoebus! He told us that it might actually be a VGA screen as the display is just remarkable. The device is "very glossy", and you can see the screen in direct sunlight no problem, as well. The button in the middle of the phone is actually a scroll wheel and it also performs the duties of a 4-way navigational pad. He also goes on to tell us that we should inform everyone that while the color choices of brown and sage green sound tacky, they are indeed "very classy and look great." The sage green device has a light champagne colorization on the front, and the back is a soft-touch rubberized finish in a sage green shade. The brown, is well, sparkly brown. Want to check out the rest of the shots? They’re in our gallery!

This looks ok, but it looks kinda cheap looking. I’ll reserve final judgement when I see it in person.

It’s only 2MP. Screen resolution is set to 320*240 tho I think the LCD itself could be VGA but I don’t think WM6 Standard supports VGA yet. I was lucky enough to get one myself! It’s pretty slick. Battery life could be better, although I have been playing with it non stop.

One way to tell if it is VGA is web surfing. WM6, or one of the later WM5 updates fixed a problem with images not getting sized correctly with VGA compliant screens. In IE select View and you should see an option called ‘Use High Resolution’ I would think if it is VGA and the software support is there this option should display.
Everything will look QVGA otherwise. Having owned several VGA PDA’s unless you force full VGA support I can see a person not knowing for sure. Icons should look much better though. If it it looks smooth and smaller icons do not look pixelated I am betting it is VGA.
Also, Coreplayer or an older version of TCPMP should give you a good indication it is VGA or not.
Also, wouldn’t System Information under Settings tell you it is VGA or not. The LCD option has the resolution.
This one is deal breaker for me. I know several people think VGA, so what, the screen is so small to begin with but VGA makes a world of difference. Especially with the smaller screen.
Whatever you find out please share. Thanks.

WM6 standard doesn’t have any options in the browser to use high res. all system info points to 320*240, but the screen itself is so fine you can’t tell there is space between the pixels. the icons and text actually look kinda bad, (soft blurry edges) like a low res image being blown up, which further leads me to believe it may be a VGA lcd. i wish my camera could get in that close so i could show you all what i mean!

I think I know what you are talking about with the icons and text looking bad - within Internet Explorer but I am surprised if you see this with the OS. You must be right then - WM6 Standard is not designed for VGA. It almost sounds like WM2003SE with VGA. The very unpolished look in many cases. That would explain why IE doesn’t have that HI Res option.
Does the LCD say 480×640 if you go to System Information? When you use IE do the images in many cases look oversized? If it was utilizing VGA like it should it would feel like you are browsing on the desktop. That Hi Res option really makes a difference. I can’t believe Standard wasn’t primed up for different resolutions since the Windows CE core was updated to handle almost any resolution you could throw at back in 2003.
I am surprised HTC didn’t do something to correct this.
Thanks for the info Tandem

The phone does have wi-fi capabilty but is not capable of wi-fi calls, VOIP (hotspot @ home). Runs on Windows mobile 6. The phone was given to us as a gift for attending the training session. Oct. 31st is the scheduled release date. The marketing behind the device is phone first. Has all of the features and functions as the dash but with a few little additions.

Cannot reveal my identity in fear of getting fired like Manny did. We were asked not to even have the phone on the sales floor until the release date of 10/31/2007. It’s a great phone/data device. Looks more like a phone but with all the functionality as data. It can support up to a 4Gig MicroSD memory card. Hot Spot @ Home (Voip) is in the works for early next year. It will be sold as the T-Mobile Shadow. I have noticed that it drains the battery a little faster than my Dash did.

the new HTC T-mobile Shadow will have twice the RAM and memory of the T-mobile DASH plus it will have a Homescreen exclusive to T-mobile with amazing Vista style Naviation. It is sporting a 2MP camera. This blows the DASH and WING out of the water with the expanded RAM and Memory it eliminates the lagging and freezing known with WM 6.0. The only downside is that it is a smartphone not pocket pc so no creating word documents. Still a phone that will challenge all others out there

October 31st is the release date at the Creve Coeur store in St. Louis, MO. Got this info from a reliable source that works at T-mobile.
I would like a better Pocket PC other than the SLOW Wing. Something like the AT&T Tilt because it has a 400 Mhz Qualcom proc. I just doubt that T-Mobile will introduce a nice PDA until 3G is launched which could be another year or so while the US Govt. vacates T-Mobile’s new 1700 Mhz spectrum.

I got my shadow yesterday and so far I really like it. I was using the dash which I also really liked.
So far the down side:
The screen is hard to keep clean. Lots of finger prints and smudges so I am worrying about wiping it off and scratching it. Thinking about using a screen protector.
The nav wheel doesn’t seem to work real well, you have to turn it a lot and there is not much control but maybe I am not used to it.
Upside:
The suretype text isn’t too bad. This is from someone who send 2000 text messages a month. It took a while to get used to and I almost wish they would have just used a standard phone keypad layout.
The touch and feel of everything is great. it hums right along and all my 3rd party apps work just fine. Balance is great.
This is a great phone for people that loved the SDA. It is more like a phone than a blackberry which is just what I was looking for.

I have it.
Just bought yesterday.
It’s pretty awesome if you guys are not really into something of perfection. I used the iPhone for 3 months before and I prefer this phone personally.
I love the schemes. It looks pretty pro and very useful. The camera is pretty good, I suppose the pixels are exactly the same as other smartphones and iPhone. Its quality are beyond 2.0MP
The core is pretty slow, but I don’t need to do anything fast but emailing and internet, that’s cool anyways.
I bought this for $150 ($172 with tax). Buy the 17$ 2GB MicroSD in Fry’s and some certain bluetooth headset, you’re good to go for the next 2 years, I’m pretty sure.

I have this phone and i dont really recommend it to anyone. The battery dies quickly even with little or no usage. And when I say quickly… I mean within 5 hours your down to 1 bar left. It takes around 2 minutes to boot up but it takes around 20 minutes before you can use it because its starting all the windows applications. It freezes up A LOT and when you try to use the task manager, it doesn’t show the open applications. It is better than the Sidekick, but you will get this phone and fall in love for the first week, than it will start dying on you and freezing and you’ll wanna throw it at something. It’s up to you to get the phone, but I would NOT suggest to do so.
