Motorola W490 launching October 1st on T-Mobile

Remember that new Motorola W490 we told you about a while back? Don’t think we forgot about the little bugger. The handset, which closely resembles Moto’s last RAZR iteration, the KRZR, is a solid middle-end device sporting little more than a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, myFaves compatibility, and, well, not a whole lot more. It’s not a bad looking phone, and for $49.99 with a new activation, there’s not a lot of room for complaining. The handset will be available in a variety of colors, including black, bright green, and purple. The phone will launch on October 1st, with immediate availability at T-Mobile corporate stores, Costco, and Target. Complete distribution will follow on the 8th of October. Any takers? Head on over to Engadget Mobile to check out the full scoopage!

Thanks, tmophonehome!

To issue a seperate ring tone you must copy contact memory from the sim to the phone memory
Page 65 of the manual . After you do this you can install individual ringtones for each caller

contacts saved to your sim will not be editable. but if you delete them and save them to the phone you can edit there caller ringtones/pictures whatever

As for everybody who is asking questions
about the self portrait option. There is
the camera button on the side of your phone.
Close your phone, and then hold down that button.
The camera should come on, and you should
be able to take pictures that way.

Have you been able to get the screensaver to work? I followed the instructon manual with regard to the settngs for backlighting, and initial set up settngs. I read on another site that the screensaver on the Motorola W490 is defectve. Customer rep wasnt any help. If yours works, how to? Thanks.

Need to have a microSD card to load music–you can’t just add it to the phone’s internal memory.

ALSO–don’t get crazy and try using anything larger than a 2gb microSD card (it won’t work!)

    Good luck!

Same problem here, trying to figure out all the feats on this contraption. There is a tricky way to self portrait. Flip open the phone, access camera or video, set your finger on the record button, turn phone to where you are looking at the batt cover/front face of phone, carefully point the camera at yourself and presto! Requires a little aiming practice. For full body shots, that requires a mirror.

    Reading down the posts:

As to the files showing on your computer but not on the phone, make sure you click on ’safely remove hardware’ before disconnecting the USB and after you unplug it the transfer should show on the phone.

As to ringtones for free, sign up for Phonezoo.com and upload your own music, edit with their easy editing software, then send the clip to your computer and load to the phone with USB. You can’t send via email to the phone unless you subscribe to the browser for an additional fee to T-Mobile. No fee and you can use any music you own.

i’m thinking about getting this phone because it’s cute and seems convenient. but i use my phone as my camera so i want good picture quality. is the picture quality with the W490 decent?

    Morgen says:

The picture quality is decent. Nothing fancy, and you can tell that the pictures were taken with a phone. Also, there is no flash, so consider the fact that you will not be able to take pictures at night.

If you can avoid this phone, do so. I’m on my third W490, and I’ve given up on it. I went to Target and bought a $30 Samsung “T-Mobile Pay as You Go” phone, and it works infinitely better.

W490 Texting is horrible and laggy, it holds very few songs, even with a 1 gig memory card in it, the RINGTONES end up in the MP3 player (yeah, you’re into your music, just spacing out, then you heat the T-Mobile Jingle. Not cool.)It doesn’t pick up good signal, and sometimes it just doesn’t receive calls or voicemail.

I love my motorola w490. Its tough and sooo pink… And I mean tough my aunt ran it over with a quad and it didnt even crack. I just cant figure out to down load music onto it with the memory card… It took me 5 days to figure out to move the pics from my phone to my cmputer… Im technologically challenged, but other than that its the best phone I have ever had…
