Motorola W490 launching October 1st on T-Mobile

Remember that new Motorola W490 we told you about a while back? Don’t think we forgot about the little bugger. The handset, which closely resembles Moto’s last RAZR iteration, the KRZR, is a solid middle-end device sporting little more than a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, myFaves compatibility, and, well, not a whole lot more. It’s not a bad looking phone, and for $49.99 with a new activation, there’s not a lot of room for complaining. The handset will be available in a variety of colors, including black, bright green, and purple. The phone will launch on October 1st, with immediate availability at T-Mobile corporate stores, Costco, and Target. Complete distribution will follow on the 8th of October. Any takers? Head on over to Engadget Mobile to check out the full scoopage!

Thanks, tmophonehome!

I just bought this phone and have been using it a couple weeks. I switched from Verizon to T-mobile.

Things I like about the W490 and Tmobile

    1. Fave 5 – mainly that is why I switched -
The Verizon plan was not flexible – I would go over on my minutes and the next month I would use hardly any minutes.
My 21 year daughter put her younger
brother on her Tmobile account (big mistake) anyway I took over the account so she wouldn’t have to pay $200 early termination fee on the second line. But I had to buy another phone (W490) because my son trashed the first phone in less than 5 months.

    2. Plays music – and bluetooth – (if I decide to use it)

Things I miss – from my Verizon phone – that are not on this phone and things I don’t like:

    1. I can’t set the display to what day it is :
like Monday, Tuesday, etc. Most of the
time I don’t care what the date is – I
want to know what day it is – wether I should be in church on Sunday or in the bar on Saturday, or work on Monday. Important things like that. I got rid of my watch – and my Cell phone is suppose to do the simple basics – maybe I’m ignorant – but I can’t find the setting to display the day. (also the display time out issue of 20 seconds – that is probably the most obvious one, and annoying.

    2. The phone earbud sucks – it won’t stay in your ear, so they promote going wireless and bluetooth. Since I work contract – and am at different customer locations – sitting at the computer – I fumble around trying to get the earbud on and then in the middle of a conversation it falls out,(of course it always goes to the floor – and then you risk stepping on it – or worse yet someone else stepping on it – this has happened several times now – this is embarrasing,
now you have to give a poor excuse to the person your talking with, why your ear bud fell out of your ear. I have come close to rolling over the earbud with my chair – and someone else stepping on it when they walked into the office.

    3. This is suppose to be a music phone – but I can’t find an cheap adapter in the stores to interface from Mini-USB to my noise canceling stereo Headphones, and can’t find a cheap set of noise canceling headphones that are mini-USB.

    4. The phone case for this phone is a belt clip leather like purse. Looks nice – but it does not lock on your belt – so if you ride a motorcycle or wear a Leather bomber style coat the elastic on your coat will tend to pushup on the belt clip and you will lose your phone going down the highway. This happened to the sales guy at Tmobile – I shrugged it off – until I was out shopping and walking with my leather bomber jacket on and went to reach for my phone and it was gone. Went back to the truck – search all over for my phone – opened the jacket and it fell to the ground, the jacket pushed the phone case off my belt. They need a good belt clip for this phone to keep it secure to your belt, not an eye glass case style clip.

    5. I loved the tip calculator on the verizon phone. It was great when you are at a restraunt to divide up the bill between 8 people, and also determine the the tip amount for the wait person. – Tmobile list they have a calculator – thats nice – but my calculator watch displayed what day it was also, it’s just I’m to old now to read those small numbers, so I don’t wear the watch anymore.

    6. I’m sure it is a feature – but haven’t found it yet – I would like to control the number of rings to my phone before it sends it to voice mail – like 1 ring, 2 rings, 4 rings, 8 rings. I have not found that setting yet.

    7. Evidently the manual said there is a skin setting, but this feature is not on the phone.

    Conclusion:

I am going to continue looking for some kind of locking belt clip so I won’t lose my phone.
I will probably buy the motorola bluetooth stereo headset to listen to music at work, and then answer the phone when it rings from the headset but the reviews I have read, people are saying that the padding for the ear is to hard and leaving sores on their ears. I think
I will grow caluses on my ears for another sub-standard design – by motorola – unless I can find a better product for under $100.

Another pet pieve that I don’t understand about cell phones in general – and could careless about is “Text Messaging”. Kids love this feature, but I’m not a kid – and typically I have more money than kids, and will buy nice things – like a really nice phone with good basic features – don’t try to sell me a bunch of junk – I will never text message anyone – I can afford to call them on my nice phone. This phone needs a good software update – and they need to focus on the basics.

I don’t like the voice quality of the person that I am speaking with. My (very) old Motorola V66 had MUCH better voice quality. Looking at ratings in Consumer Reports, the voice quality isn’t very good on most of the phones available.

Shouldn’t voice quality be top on the list of features?

you can access them by going to main menu, fun & apps, scroll down to sounds, and there u go.. access your music u downloaded form your computer.I just got my w490 yesterday and its a great phone.I downloaded songs onto my 64mb micro sd card I had from my v360 and it works fine.also, you can set songs u download from your pc and set them as ringtones.full song ringtones, thats the shit. You need a usb cable to do that.you also need to go into settings, scroll down to usb settings and change it to memory card, then windows detects it as a removeable disk. click on it then go to the audio folder, and drag and drop. thats all u need to do. hope this helps everyone…..

Just got this phone and it seems to work well except a couple things. In the manual it says while in the viewfinder taking a picture you can close the phone to take a self-portrait where the viewfinder displays on the outside screen but this wont work. Also is there a way to preview ringtones before buying them? Help???

Hey, I was having the same problem about the self-portrait feature. When I close the phone it just goes blank. Is there a way to set it to make the self-portrait feature work, or should I try to get it fixed?

    Dennis says:

I’m starting to solve some of my problems -

    1. I ordered the Headset Adapter Mini-USB to 3.5mm on Amazon.com which came from SF Planet.com. Cost = $1.59 and for 1 cent more I bought the Mini-USB to 2.5MM. Total cost =$1.60 for adapters, and $9.96 for shipping.
Now I am listening to my music using my standard stereo noise canceling headphones – sounds good.

    2. Ordered a belt clip from Amazon for $3.95 and shipping was $4.86 total = $8.81.

    3. Ordered the Motorola S805 Bluetooth stereo head set for $88.00 – they haven’t arrived yet.
Shipping free. I will let you know what I think of them once they arrive.

I agree w/ the fact that its just like the razor….I’m with Tmobile and I’m tired of how they always offer the same exact phone, just different colors. They all suck really! I love tmobile’s plans, but they gotta step it up. I personally love Nokia but now their battery life isn’t what it used to be. I’m tired of going through phones…please for the love of the Lord Tmobile…..GET NEW PHONES OTHER THAN THE RAZOR, KRAZR, SCHMAYZOR, YAYZOR, BLAZR TAYZR…OR ANY OTHER KIND…oh and lets not forget…samsung. Geez.

I received the Motorola S805 stereo headphones today. These headsets for the price ($88.00)are great – and exactly what I was looking for.
The Bluetooth capability is good for about 30 feet, more distance than I will ever need.
I charged the headset for about 3 hours, and had it working in less than 5 minutes once they were charged. No issues – these are headsets – so they are big – I really don’t like ear buds and the padding on these headsets are fine – and shouldn’t have any issues with them hurting your ears – in comparison to people complaining the bluetooth Motorola HT820 stereo headset padding hurting their ears.
The Motorola S805 also comes with a real nice carrying case. Here is a review on these headsets. http://wmexperts.com/reviews/bluetooth_headsets/review_motorola_s805_bluetooth.html

Mike why would you want to but a ring tone? Just use the voice recorder to record any part of a song you have on your computer C/D player even the radio. Then save as ring tone. You might have to play around with the volume on the computer C/d player a bit to get good sound but it doesn’t cost a cent. I learned that little trick with another fone i had. Any question just ask.
