I have never used any modifying software on my iphone and it is giving my the “Incorrect SIM Insert and unlocked and valid SIM to activate iphone” message. I went to the Apple store in Sacramento and was told that the IMEI number on the back of my phone does not match that in the software. They say the only way that could happen is if I opened my phone. I never did open my phone and nobody else has access to my phone to open it. They told me I was out of luck and my warranty was void. First of all this sucks since I did nothing. Any one else have this problem?

Last two comments sound like Apple employees. With regards to those that had 1.0.2 and updated fully aware of the consequences…WTF?

Lastly, Apple are locked into restricting the phone because of contractual obligations. I live in Europe, the market doesn;t work like that. People switch because of tariffs and not handsets which are heavily subsidised. I am an Apple buff but iphone doesn’t make sense when you considere the minimum contract terms and what you get. In this manner, I am a firm advocate for buying one and running on more favourable tariffs. Apple could have made money with a sim free product here in europe. People are locked into contracts which they have to pay to get out off, in most cases up to the tune of cost of an iphone. Then what, pay for an iphone ontop of that and a contract that bends you over a barrel…. Its not gonna float.

There would have been more money to gain allowing people of more networks to buy and use the phone with their existing contracts rather than forcing them to use a specific network irrespective of revenue sharing agreements. I believe the incremental sales would have justified such an arrangement.

I was given an iphone for free, great product but even then I’d wait for it to be hacked rather than accept a crazy contract with O2 (official UK carrier). Cost of iphone over contract period with O2 = £35 per month minimum for 18months + £269 = £900 or approx $1800. Sour Apples and Jobs says… “Show me the Money!”

Hi, I am looking to sell iphones on ebay. i am buying unlocked iphones. Do u think that i shall buy them or not cos my customers might get angry when they get a bricked phone when they try to update the software. and if you don’t update the iphone firmware 1.1.1 will the phone work normally like all the Youtube, Safari etc functions

Christopher – you are absolutely right. Apple has every right in the world to make this fix.

The agreement to use the iPhone says that activation is subject to AT&T credit review. There is also a portion in the agreement (along with EVERY cell phone agreement) about using unauthorized/3rd party software on the phone – if you install non-apple stuff and your stuff gets bricked, it’s not Apple’s fault and they won’t be fixing it.

That means that when you activated and began using your iPhone, you agreed to BOTH OF THE ABOVE ITEMS. By activating the iPhone and using it on T-mobile, that’s money that AT&T isn’t getting, they YOU AGREED VIA CONTRACT THEY WOULD. When you put a bunch of other crap on there that’s not from Apple and, low and behold, the next firmware update bricks your iPhone, you just did exactly what Apple warned you not to do when you agreed to your contract!

You can’t sign an agreement, do everything the agreement says not to do, then expect the companies that provide you with your cell phone service (Apple/AT&T) to have any sympathy with you whatsoever.

So. Cry me a river, build a bridge, and GET OVER IT.

Anyone else have their IMAP email accounts stop working after the update? I had to rebuild the profiles and adjust the SSL settings in order to fix it.

Jeff B. the double tap when you double tap the home button it brings you to you phone favorites (should have been there all the time), and its assignable to either phone favorites or ipod.

Jeff, you know you want the Tilt, just wait for it. Otherwise I enjoy the iphone but it is what it is. No regrets from me but i went from BB8800 to iphone.

I had AppTap Installer on my iPhone and apps through it, updated via iTunes without any reset or alteration and had no issues. Update went smooth and works fine? Just overwrite the hacked firmware and apps. Now I just sit and wait for the updated AppTapp.

Well, After speaking with the Apple Tech before updating he said the AppTapp from NullRiver Installer and related third party Native apps would be OK. But updated OK. All Third Party Native Apps are gone. Now waiting for NullRiver to make a new Installer for PC’s for the 1.1.1 update.

Got an error while updating, eventhough I haven’t modified it at all. Had to restore and then update. Took longer than anticipated and I need to re-sync music/vids/contacts, but getting the double-click spacebar to insert a period is worth it. (Used to my BB)

BTW, the “double click home button” brings up the Phone favorites or IPod.

What is this new “double click home button” deal?
What does it do?
Is it making the iPhone a little more worth the money?
Has anybody gone from a Blackjack to an iPhone and seen the difference in how much softer the iPhone is? Does this update make it louder, more to a Blackjack type of loud?
Does anybody still want to answer these questions after I’ve rattled your brain for answers?
Is this starting to get annoying?
If you know the answers to all the above questions can you let me know?

well if you’re downloading and installing apps via Installer, according to their website, its only for 1.0, 1.0.1, and 1.0.2

I did the update in less than 15 minutes. The only thing is that the iPhoneRingToneMaker is not working yet for the new firmware.

Hey guys I wanted to know if I have an iPhone that has just been jailbroke for 3rd party apps and that alone not unlocking, if this will brick my iPhone when I try to update to the new firmware version. I don’t really care about the 3rd party apps that much because I rarely use them and I can always just add them at a later date. But the real question is does this new update remove my jailbreak status?

Sounds like they are just not updating the unlocked phones, is that sooo bad? and since it takes like 5 seconds to install 3rd party apps it sounds like thats not too bad either.

Gee wait till the next release of firmware, or better yet when they have the new 16gig model with GPS, and who knows what other bells and whistles they’ll throw in it by that time.

Glad I returned my iphone, going through all the reinstall, and other bs, not worth the time to me.
