Apple releases iPhone firmware 1.1.1

Yes yes, friends. The day has finally arrived. Apple dropped a new iPhone firmware revision, bringing the official software notation up to version 1.1.1. This new software brings a host of changes and upgrades. Here’s a rundown of some of the more significant changes:

  • iTunes Wi-Fi music store
  • Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
  • Home button double-click functionality
  • Double-tap spacebar to intelligently insert period and space
  • Apple Bluetooth headset battery status now appears in iPhone Status bar
  • Support for TV Out
  • EDGE/GPRS can now be manually turned on and off
  • Adjustable alert volume

Apple elegantly states they have "discovered that some of the unauthorized unlocking programs available on the Internet may cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software. If you have modified your iPhone’s software, applying this software update may result in your iPhone becoming permanetly inoperable" For now, if you’ve "modified" your iPhone, we suggest you wait and see what the word is before updating. Although, the new features look oh-so-good! If you do decide to hit the update, let us know what happens!

Thanks, to everyone that sent this in!

UPDATE: I unlocked mine, but still use AT&T, and have installed 3rd party applications — the update was a breeze — didn’t even restore my iPhone before updating!  And…3rd party applications are gone! What are you seeing?

UPDATE 2: Trying to jailbreak with Independance forced me to restore my iPhone…ugh!

Yup, totally different Bluetooth profile is required. Bluetooth headphone require the BT stack to support AD2P, which I believe is available but option in Bluetooth 1.2 implementations or later. Mono headsets just use a simple headset profiel.

“unauthorized unlocking programs available” if there was an authorized version, no one would care. Bad form Apple.

what a moron, yeah boycotts never work.

the update is in iTunes above the restore. one click then accept the EULA and it does the rest. The phone at the end seems to get “reactivated”

speaker volume seems alot louder for ipod functions but i dont see much difference on mine with phone functions but I thought mine was good with phone and speaker volume before.

iTunes on the phone seems very good, responsive. The double click for phone favorites is great, should have been like that from the start.

thanks, and i’m all for boycott when something is killing people or giving them cancer, but for a consumer electronic device? Get real, try a little perspective. No ones lives are getting ruined by Apple.

Boy Genius, you stated that you had an unlocked phone and you applied the 1.1.1 update with no problems. Did the activated ATT SIM work after this? If so, what method of unlock did you use?

Ummmmm it is not new that companies reject unsupported firmware. It only makes sense because unsupported firmware can leave a device useless. You actually expect a company to remain liable for getting returns of devices because people decided to tinker and lose money on it?? Give me a freaking break.

I did an unsupported firmware update with my old iPaq 5455 when a new PocketPC came out. I bricked my unit, returned it, and got a nice response back saying that my warranty was voided because I flashed it with unsupported firmware.

From a business standpoint, it makes sense to add that in a license to remove all liability from them. Otherwise, you get fools experimenting with their units, and expecting the company to give them a new one if they mess it up. This keeps people from SUING them if they don’t replace the unit for their folly.

I just cant believe how many idiots think flashing just any unsupported firmware is okay, and expecting apple to still service the unit.

It is in the license agreement. There is absolutely nothing you can do. If you don’t like it, don’t accept the agreement and take the phone back before activation.

Just updated, standard iPhone using AT&T.
I had many 3rd party programs installed that are now gone. Will have to reinstall via installer.

I never had the unlock loaded, so I have no idea what that will do.

I guess I should prepare to reinstall any 3rd party applications each time a firmware update is rolled out.

Gee wait till the next release of firmware, or better yet when they have the new 16gig model with GPS, and who knows what other bells and whistles they’ll throw in it by that time.

Glad I returned my iphone, going through all the reinstall, and other bs, not worth the time to me.

Best of luck guys and gals
