Vonage pays Sprint $69.5 million fine

Vonage, one of the country’s biggest VoIP companies has been ordered to pay Sprint at least $69.5 million in fines and restitution. The judgement, handed down by a Federal Court judge references 6 major copyright infringements. Sprint, as the original owner of the aforementioned copyrights is entitled to immediate payment for damages already inflicted, as well as 5% of any future revenue that Vonage generates. We’re not accountants over here, but that’s a pretty significant portion of future profits. This settlement comes on the heels of a ruling earlier this year, granting Verizon a similar deal. Things aren’t looking so good for Vonage at the moment, now, are they?

    Not to mention that courts don’t hand down “settlements”. Courts hand down judgments. Settlements are those things to which parties voluntarily agree.

    Everyone I know that has them has billing problems, and after canceling has more problems there were also articles on how they render the linksys routers inoperable and fuck there customers even more.

    I read in Wireless news a while back AOL/TimeWarner is looking to buy them out

    I have had them since 2005, have had any issues with them either. You get the odd situation when the ISP goes down, but who doesn’t right.

    I lived through the wild west days of trying to get lower cost telecom services with competitive local exchange companies and was burned badly. Now I feel like this is a déjà vu – as I have Vonage service. I am tired of going with service providers who are either not well funded or in this case not well endowed with technology that is actually their own. The alternatives seem to be limited as many other providers are small or going under (just look at Sunrocket). I hear there are some good providers that are stable because they are well funded, e.g. Net2Phone, but I am very gun shy. What a mess!

    I have been using Vonage for the last 3 years. The service is A+ and the calls are crystal clear (better then my land line) and it all works Perfect. I would rate it a 9 (from a scale 0-10)
    When there is a problem..most of the time it’s the internet connection which is NOT their fault.
    Now with a 60 country world plan for only $24.99..you can’t go wrong..WHO can TOP that??
