MySpace drops free mobile client
Leave it to MySpace to bring some pain to the mobile social networking world. The uber-site announced today that they will be offering a free version of their popular MySpace Mobile client to users across the USA and UK. How will this compare with some of the carrier-supported versions currently on the market? Well, for starters, this bad boy will be ad-supported. Given MySpace’s predilection to disgusting banner ads and gaudy placement we don’t have high hopes for a terribly classy implementation of mobile advertising. That said, we certainly appreciate the effort, and don’t doubt that this will be a very viable option for those without access to another version. The new MySpace Mobile will allow users to to search the site, send and receive messages, deal with friend requests, and much more. All carriers and most handsets are supported, too.

OT (I know,) but I have to ask this since you guys often use this term.
What word do you use to mean when some someone stops offering some service/thing?

Sucks for the people that already bought the sidekick myspace client.

I think it’s great when people trying to make a buck off end users of another service get showed up by the original service at no cost. Unfortunatly it seems that it takes people buying into things like this before the service provider realizes and say hey that is something we should be doing ourselves.
The only thing is they have to make it better than the 3rd party developers software. Which they do have the upper hand on this since they control the server side as well. The competition will sure keep the 3rd party developer on there toes or be forced to give it up.

Uh, I think you’re missing the fact that the Myspace Mobile on AT&T etc is actually by Myspace. This is just another version by the same people, with more precious screen real estate taken up by ads.

“Eventually, Fox Interactive will seek to sell more targeted advertising, using registration data from cell phone carriers. The company also hopes to send local ads based on a user’s location using GPS data sent by the phones.”
Zoinks. I won’t be letting this access the “Sprint Extensions” on my phone for sure.

Randy, that “drops” headline confused the hell out of me too. Maybe they could also use “launches” (e.g. into the bin) when something has actually been, err, dropped?
HTC launches Universal, drops Omni, for example?

They’ve dropped it before it’s released? Need to change that title there.
