Verizon quietly releases the Samsung i760

If you’ve been waiting for the Samsung i760 for the better part of a year, you might be able to scam the system. Never mind. After Verizon reads this post I’m sure they’ll lock it down faster than Nicole Richie’s prison stint. Nevertheless, getting the Samsung i760 more than a week before its official September 24th drop date isn’t much to complain about. Customers are reporting that this super slick Windows Mobile 6 handset is now available by way of Verizon’s customer service and Business to Business channels. Prospective customers beware: pricing is pretty savage. The i760 on a 2 year contract will run you $399 plus a $50 MIR and a 1 year contract will nab you one for $459.99 plus $50 MIR. Not exactly chump change. That said, if you need the best and brightest on Verizon, this is, hands down, your best bet. Run, don’t walk, to your phone and call those CS reps. Give them this SKU for the device, SCHi760ZKV, and tell ‘em BGR sent ya’. Just be prepared for Samsung’s usual horrible keyboards that don’t register fast keypresses…They’ll never learn! But wait, what about accessories? Yeah, we got you covered. The available accessories along with the corresponding SKUs are after the jump!

Thanks, Omie!

I got mine yesterday. I don’t know why everyone thinks it’s ugly – it’s beautiful! A great improvement over my i730 (you can actually use it as a phone!) and quite a bit smaller with the extended battery on it.

One question, though. What did they do with my Instant Messenger?

P.S. – with total discounts my phone was only $99 on the Verizon site.

I agree- anyone who was dissing this phone before they ever saw/operated it, and just went off of one promo picture either has no idea of it capabilities, or is just interested in how cool other will think their phone looks. How retarded. Personally, I could care less how the phone looks (even though it is much smaller and stylish than you think), how does it PERFORM? With the exception of an inexplicably weak phone resolution, this phone ROCKS!

Just got this phone 2 days ago. First smartphone i ever had and this thing rocks. Takes awhile to figure out but once you get the hang of it…wow. I was a little skeptical about using the internet with it but it really stays connected. I dont know about the blackberrys q etc but this phone is a definite sleeper . I really feel like im carrying a mini laptop.

Have had the i760 phone ~2wks. Much improved over i730. Buttons are different so there is a slight learning curve but all in all a great device. Speed seems better, keyboard is much better, and the external dialer prevents you from having to smudge up the screen. Very satisfied. And for i730 users – this phone is smaller and has a camera! Active sync over bluetooth with windows vista laptop was no problem. Now I just have to figure out how to use the phone as a modem over bluetooth.

I’d like to replace my I830 if I can use the I760 in Europe. Really like the camera feature. Any chance they will add GSM for international use to the phone features?

I bashed the He77 out of this phone earlier but I must say, I have to recant my statement….It really looks better in person and isn’t as big as it looks in pictures. Switching to landscape mode is very fast and the screen is bright & looks great although it has a bit of a squishy feel to it. The side buttons will take some getting used to because more than likely you’ll hit them & end calls or adjust the volume by mistake. (a bit of a learning curve I guess). Overall, this is the best PDA/PPC that Verizon has to offer at the moment and people are already snapping them up quickly. I’ll order mine in a couple of days. With advance device credit, new every two and $50.00 MIR it can be had for a very decent price of $149.99.

I had the i730 and have upgraded to the the i760 and it has been refined beautifully. The phone functions better in almost all respects: It uses less power and lasts much longer. The phone is so much more intuitive than the 760 — the buttons work with the qwerty pad much, much better — so you’re faster when emailing or calling. The Voice Activation is phenomenal == literally you can do many applications with out touching the phone if you have a quality bluetooth headset (I use the Plantronics stereo/headphones/phone and it allows me to do things like pushing the button on my headset and saying: “Play elvis costello”, or “play music” and it asks me ‘album, artist, or song’ . it is just great. really, this thing may not be quite as cool as the iphone but it is superior to the iphone if you’re a biz man and you need to have phone service, access to the internet and email — face it, the iphone on the AT&T network is a joke.

Well, just ordered mine and can’t wait till I get it. I really like Samsung phones, and when I saw they made a smartphone I was excited. I did call in and got the additional $100 off right away, and I got a corp discount with my place of business. Bonus!!! Hope it is as good as I am expecting it to be.

I upgraded from the i730 to the i760. I am, so far, very pleased with the phone’s performance. I do miss being able to answer the phone by sliding it open and hanging up by sliding it closed.

The phone is not as ugly as you think. The keypad acts a a numberpad when you type on the keyboard (no more function key nonsense). That has been great for email and texting. I am not the biggest fan of the chrome mouse on the front – had they gone with a different color, there could be fewer references to it being a phone from the 80s. The phone has the fat girl/moped paradigm – everyone has fun riding them, noone wants to be seen with one.

I needed the extended battery on my i730, which made it 7.4 oz and quite bulky – god forbid you tried to carry it in a pair of shorts. The i760, with extended battery, is 6.1 oz and much thinner (about the size of a Motorola Q, just slightly thicker). The internal antenna is greatly appreciated, too – fishing the i730 out of your pants pocket was a complicated maneuver with the giant antenna.

While locked, turning on the lcd is completed by touching a button on the top of the phone. Locking the phone is done via the touchscreen, rather than that small slider tab on the side of the i730 (I dialed many numbers while it was in my pocket). Unlocking it is quick and simple, as well.

I never cared about not having a camera on the i730, so the addition of one is inconsequential for me.

It is unfortunate that they did not bundle the desk cradle with the phone, but 40 bucks isn’t the end of the world.

One handed typing is a thing of the past. That may be a good thing for me – shouldn’t be doing that while driving anyway.

    Battery life is significantly increased.

It works really well as a PHONE, which was where the i730 really let you down.

I would recommend the phone, especially due to the low price. I believe that I dropped $600 for the i730. The i760 was $230 with a car charger.

I agree with “rober” above – AT&T’s network is poor. I actually have a Pantech c3000 through them (I would forward calls to it on the weekend so that I wouldn’t have to lug the i730 around). The iPhone is more of a toy, anyway.

I have had this phone for over a month now. True, it’s not the best looking on the market but it is one of the best. It has worked flawlessly all the time. Sync between Exchange is great. 3rd party apps run great. It really is great. Who cares that it looks old. If you want a good looking toy, get an iPhone.

Dude…have you guys used the 6700? That thing is a hunk of junk, people couldn’t hear you and you had to turn on the touch screen everytime you wanted to navigation voicemail! This thing has buttons right on the face…WAMMO instant and easy use. It’s got buttons everywhere you need them. You guys wanna USE your phone or just stare at it all day? If you want pretty get a blond…or the iphone. I’ll take this brunette any day…gives me what I want.

BUT watch out…there’s a bug with bluetooth on it. pairs with my g35 but then once it links with my headset it won’t connect to my car anymore! Lame-O. They say they’re workin on a fix but I’m running out of time on the Verizon 30 day return deal.

Had it since the first day it was out. Memory leaks. 2 to 3 megs per day. Neither Samsung nor Verizon have yet acknowledged it, but if you google memory link i760 … you’ll see i’m not alone. Leave the phone on too long, and before you know it, you’ll get a memory full message, and you have to start turning prog’s off, left and right.

    xtian says:

memory leaks come from opening apps/progs and pressing OK or the X button, WM never had the ability to CLOSE/SHUTDOWN/EXIT apps/progs but only to minimize them, check the task manager and see if when u press X or ok on apps it fully closes, unless u install 3rd party app/prog closer (like Wisbar Adv.) you will have memory issues

my question to other owners of the i760 is the Backlight off setting, i set it for 1 minute and all it does is DIM down and not fully shutoff, is anyone else experiencing this and also on POWERSAVING when i set it and it powers down the only way to power back on is by pressing the power button or sliding out the KB while pressing the dial pad and other front buttons does nothing, excuse my noobness my last WM PPC was XDA2 Mini a year ago and i new to WM6

The Samsung SCH i760 is a great phone. I don’t know why people say it is ugly. I think it looks great. It isn’t slick and sexy like some other phones, but this is a phone that gets it right.

First, the phone is fast with its 400Mhz processor. I was able to load videos from Vtap.com fast. Watching music videos, and news on the SCH i760 is really fun. The phone is fully featured with WM6.1. When I bought the phone I actually decided to get a 1G SD media card. I try to store my music, apps, and pics on the SD card as not to use up all my device memory. WM needs a lot of memory to work well. If this phone had 128 of RAM instead of 64MB it would really rock. As it is now it rocks.

I like the voice features. I can tell the phone (by voice) to open media player. I then can command it to play songs, and it will read to me the names of the albums! How cool is that!

The phone works well, but there was a little hiss. I like the speakerphone. It was loud and worked extremely well.

I downloaded operamini and was viewing web content easily.

I don’t know why Boy Genius doesn’t like the keyboard. I love the keyboard. I found it much better than the keyboard on the Blackberry Curve (which I also own).

The phone is not flashy, but it gets the job done, and does it well. It is fully featured, and I highly recommend it. If you want to learn more search YouTube for videos. There are some great reviews of this phone there.
