I am thinking about getting the AT&T Tilt. Which service plan makes the most sense to get with my below needs:

1) I use the internet often to check emails and view some websites, but it doesn’t have to be on all the time. I just want the fastest connection possible.

2) I have a slingbox, so I’d want to be able to view slingplayer on the AT&T tilt at various times.

3) I have a laptop and would like to use the tilt as a modem to get online with the laptop.

4) I don’t need text messaging, as I don’t use it.

5) The camera portion is not a big deal for me either.

What is the cheapest AT&T PDA Data plan I can get on that will work with the above, excluding the normal minutes plan?

been running tom tom for 2 weeks now. got my tilt realease day – 10/5. love the damn thing! can’t put it down. it just works – fast. jawbone is also flawless with it. ciccone was right…

forget the ATT crap games and get Zio Golf 2 and you’re set for hours in an airport. anyone got other good game suggestions for this?

TTN is excellent. runs flawlessly, eats battery and john cleese is good but too quiet. grabbed some others off the net but all to quiet. UK Jane voice is best. COMPLETELY customizable software.

anyone else use HTC home plug in?
anyone tried to hack this back to HTC rom?
XDA are very techie about all this. i just need a decent tested rom from a regular user – not a supergeek…

About touchflo, I dont know how you can get it without flashing your rom with the TyTN II settings.

TomTom does not charge other than the cost of the maps. you can buy the maps a city at a time (how much and how are not clear to me since that part of there site has been down for maintenance.) Or you could buy the DVD of the US/Canada maps for $150. It is over 1GB so a micro SD card of 2GB or more is needed. Either way, no monthly fees, although updating maps may be extra im not sure.

A locked phone is for that Carrier only. ATT locked phones will only work with ATT sim cards.

I have herd of it being a law that a wireless provider must unlock a device after a certain amount of time from purchase if requested. I dont know how much time that is and I dont know what they do with the rom, but concevably if you just have a little time left on you contract with ATT, you could get the Tilt, have it unlocked without a hack and then get a T-Mobile account and use the Tilt with them.

Ps. to all who have mentioned ATTs data plans… I was on the ATT site and found an unlimited data plan with 200txt for $20. With Cingular I was paying $40 for data plus $5 for txt. The $40 plan has unlimited everything including ATT TV which im not that familiar with and dont want. So if you are looking into cheaper data plans look into it.

The HTC homepage — is that the touchflow thing people have been mentioning? And is it something I can like download or hack onto the Tilt?

TomTom charges by city right? And then once you have a city then there aren’t any other charges involved? I just don’t want to run the risk of getting charged for using a different service.

And finally, just to be sure, when a phone is locked to AT&T, that means I can’t use a T-Mobile SIM card right? I can’t believe I have to ask, because there was a time when I was hacking phones and other things that requiredd a lot more extensive knowledge than this. Funny how memory slips when you don’t use those skills.

Yes it will be locked even if its with no commitment.

The unlocked doesnt have any of the software that ATT puts on it and it has the HTC home page. It comes with a free city from tom tom. It doesnt have the white keys. Comes with other such goodies such as Nero mobile, Quick GPS, Sprite Backup, World Card Mobile.

All of these differences other than the white keys are hackable or software fixes.

I like my unlocked, less work for the look and usability that I want, but if you are strapped for cash, just get the tilt. Its the TyTN II with white number keys and only one or no camera and a little hacking.

Also, one more question: Would getting the Tilt from AT&T at the “no-commitment pricing” of $550 ($450 after rebates) mean I’d get it locked? Like if I bought it from them at this price would I be able to swap in a T-Mobile SIM card and just go from there? Or would I have to hack it to unlock it? Thanks again!

People talk about getting the Tilt as if it’s a better alternative since it “doesn’t require a data plan,” but wouldn’t NOT having a plan mean either (a) not being able to access key features like GPS (b) paying out the butt every month for data while accessing email and internet or ( c) a combination of both? It’s my understanding that you can get the 8925 from AT&T without any commitment for 450 after mail-in rebates, but I could very easily be wrong here. Basically what I want to know is: What’s the real differences between the Tytn II and the 8925 aside from the front camera, and what are the advantages/disadvantages of these differences? Are the T-mobile data plans THAT much cheaper than AT&T’s? I just need unlimited data and 1000+ text messages. If T-Mobile’s plans are ~10 dollars cheaper a month, that’s a 120 dollar difference a year. At that rate, buying an unlocked Tytn II for 750-850 still doesn’t make up the price difference for a year’s commitment with AT&T at 400 dollars for the 8925. That still puts the unlocked Tytn with T-Mobile at about 630 dollars.

To summariaze:
- My contract with AT&T expires next month and it would be cheaper to go to T-Mobile with my parents as far as plans go.
- What’s the difference (advantages/disadvantages) to choosing the 8925 over an unlocked Tytn II or the other way around?
- How much cheaper are the T-Mobile data plans than AT&T’s?
- Is there a free GPS service available with either version of the phone?

I noticed that the WM6 installed doesn’t support unicode, so I can’t even view non-English websites.

Do I need to find new WM6 versions to re-flash the ROMs with? How would I then get back to the AT&T version?

(had my guy at the biggest corp store in the northeast keep an eye out for it and hold one for me. they did go fast. only came in this am. he called me at 9:30.)

optionally: you could be a decent human being and STOP YELLING. you can’t slam a forum and show up later for help. uncool.

all others – the front cam is only good if you can use 2-way video share – ATT’s is one way. neat but not duplex videoconferencing.
