AT&T Tilt drops some knowledge on us
Even though we’re rockin’ the official HTC TyTN II, confirmed carrier offerings as always good. If there was any doubt in your mind that AT&T would be picking up the TyTN II, you can safely lay those worries to rest. Just as we all thought, AT&T will be picking up the version without a front camera. Why they do this is beyond us, especially since they have launched their Video Share feature. Regardless, it still makes us tingle to see some leaked docs on the device and what exactly it will be bringing to the table. On the email side, AT&T’s Tilt will offer Xpress Mail, Microsoft Direct Push (duh!), POP3/IMAP4, BlackBerry Connect 4.0 (we’re already using this and love it), and Good Mobile Messaging (available post-launch). The AT&T Tilt will also sport Push-to-talk, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0. Our doc says "late September launch" not October, and the lowest you’ll snag the phone for is going to be $349.99 on a 2 year agreement with compatible data plan! Full slide, pricing, and compatible data plans after the jump!
Thanks, Jay L!

Well I know it’s nice and geeky to have the front camera -even if it’s not of any real use on most networks yet- but I imagine it might be possible to use it with Skype or other IP-based apps. Any thoughts on this? Can anybody confirm doing IP-based videoconferencing on Windows Mobile? I am trying to figure out if it is worth paying extra for the front camera or if I should just go for the unlocked AT&T Tilt.
I HEARD ATT IS GOING TO HAVE VIDEO CALLING IN A COUPLE MONTHS SO IM GOING TO GET THE UNLOCKED HTC KAISER…. IM JUST TRYING TO FIND IT FOR LESS THAN $699…. ANYBODY KNOW A PLACE OR WEBSITE????????????????????
I JUST GOT MY TILT! f-in finally…
(had my guy at the biggest corp store in the northeast keep an eye out for it and hold one for me. they did go fast. only came in this am. he called me at 9:30.)
first things first
Nasty – go away, you bonehead.
optionally: you could be a decent human being and STOP YELLING. you can’t slam a forum and show up later for help. uncool.
all others – the front cam is only good if you can use 2-way video share – ATT’s is one way. neat but not duplex videoconferencing.
it is out now, too, tuyo.
first reactions:
this thing is f a s t. . . . >>>!!
don’t like chrome buttons.
HTC stuff is good
keyboard is assisted-slide
makes it hard to get to flex buttons
love the one-piece shorty stylus
like all access buttons on the bottom
camera is also blazingly fast
thing is gunmetal black. sharp.
hardware is very tight and solid-feeling
cost?
399 at att with 2 years. data was 40/mo.
no case. will USB charge. (i believe the tytn2 will not? (heard that from ciccone on mobilitytoday)
git yerself some! i think i can live with this for about a year and a bit. the 8125 lasted me 18 months.
Thanks for all the input. see yas at XDA!
New AT&T Tilt: No Touch Flow, No Front Camera, No Business Card scanner.
Differ from HTC TyTnII
I got my Tilt yesterday, $299 with 2-yr contract, $40 data plan.
I noticed that the WM6 installed doesn’t support unicode, so I can’t even view non-English websites.
Do I need to find new WM6 versions to re-flash the ROMs with? How would I then get back to the AT&T version?
ATT new Tilt: No Front Camera, No Touch Flow (similar to iPhone touch interactive), No Business Card scanner.
HTC TyTn II has all
at&t tilt= no touch flow, no front camara, no business card scanner, no tom tom, = no buy, its a fucked up phone and you wonder why they are selling it cheap, because its a fucking cheap quality and at&t sucks, offering it for 40 fucking dollars data, fucking too much, you think I am stupid? the only thing I like from at&t is the rollover, and after that everything is fucked up, I am waiting for any other GSM such as tmobile come out with their 3G and then I will buy it unlock, I hate at&t they sucks, don’t buy this phone, and if you want to buy it, just buy it unlock, if you with at&t don’t renew your contract and just wait a while and you will have other phone company with 3G and you fucking set, fuck at&t and fuck at&t phones, you will see they going to fucking go dead once again, remember? in the old days, when they were bought by cingular?
FYI: ATT new Tilt: No Front Camera, No Touch Flow (similar to iPhone touch interactive), No Business Card scanner.
HTC TyTn II has it all.
damn, you must really hate ATT! lol
Bond, Mike, Steve, I tend to believe it can all be softwared back in -except the front camera of course-. Besides, at least in Eu. the cost of two-way video is ridiculous, it comes across as a toy thing, you use it a couple of times to impress your friends and that’s it. Been there, done that, literally. But then there is IP-based videoconferencing. If anybody has managed to get Skype, MSN/Live or some other IP-based app to do two-way video using the front-cam on WiMo6, that would definitely be a good incentive to pay the for the front camera.
RELEASED! I didn’t want to change my data plan, so I happily paid $299 (includes $100 in MIR)last night for my Tilt at ATT Premier site. Should arrive tomorrow!
so where/how do i get the touchflo software to load onto my 8500?
I am confused about somethings. Do you have to pay extra for wi-fi settings because I have it at my house. And is the phone $299?
i bought my tilt today i was very upset because i bought it and i forget a little detail i didnt check if it has front camera and it doesnt. also you should pay for the wifi. i just to have an mda from t-mobile and the wifi was for free. the internet is very expensive 39.99 i just to pay $20 in t-mobile. the radio, tv and gps it doesnt work without unlimited internet. the costumer service its the worse only until 9pm t-mobile was 24/7. also the plans are the shipest night and weekends 59.99 in t-mobile 49.99. i think i did a mistake with this phone i was looking at the internet for this phone and i only bought it because i think you can do webcam.and also is not compatible with my old bluetooth and the leather case is not as good as the one on youtube and the accessories they don’t have headphone they don’t have the minisd 4gig i don’t know they don’t have any specification about the name of the phone in the internet not even when you have it in your handa. onlly know as tilt.
New to the site here. Just adding something to think about when considering whether or not to buy the HTC unlocked or the Tilt – the street price for the HTC is approx. $850. By the time you pay for the Tilt PLUS the data plan @$40, you have paid for HTC and then some! It makes sense economically to buy the HTC unlocked.
Falconhawk, if a user actually needs the data plan (this IS a converged device), then why would you want to pay $850 for an unlocked device and STILL have to pay $40/mo for data?
Go to ATT wireless you can oder it for $249.00.
(Short version at the bottom) Hey, so just clarifying some things. First off, I’ve been following this damn thing since last Spring when it was announced, and now that it’s finally out I’m broke yet again. My P.O.S. laptop is getting fixed under warranty and when it comes back I hope to sell it and get this phone. My contract expires in November with AT&T, but my parents have T-Mobile so it would be way cheaper to sign on with them on a family plan instead. Still, I’m not sure I’m ready (or able) to shell out 800 bucks for a phone if I’m going with the unlocked version.
People talk about getting the Tilt as if it’s a better alternative since it “doesn’t require a data plan,” but wouldn’t NOT having a plan mean either (a) not being able to access key features like GPS (b) paying out the butt every month for data while accessing email and internet or ( c) a combination of both? It’s my understanding that you can get the 8925 from AT&T without any commitment for 450 after mail-in rebates, but I could very easily be wrong here. Basically what I want to know is: What’s the real differences between the Tytn II and the 8925 aside from the front camera, and what are the advantages/disadvantages of these differences? Are the T-mobile data plans THAT much cheaper than AT&T’s? I just need unlimited data and 1000+ text messages. If T-Mobile’s plans are ~10 dollars cheaper a month, that’s a 120 dollar difference a year. At that rate, buying an unlocked Tytn II for 750-850 still doesn’t make up the price difference for a year’s commitment with AT&T at 400 dollars for the 8925. That still puts the unlocked Tytn with T-Mobile at about 630 dollars.
To summariaze:
- My contract with AT&T expires next month and it would be cheaper to go to T-Mobile with my parents as far as plans go.
- What’s the difference (advantages/disadvantages) to choosing the 8925 over an unlocked Tytn II or the other way around?
- How much cheaper are the T-Mobile data plans than AT&T’s?
- Is there a free GPS service available with either version of the phone?
Thanks ahead of time. I really appreciate any feedback.
**Edit** on the second paragraph, I meant to say “people talk about getting the Tytn II”
Also, one more question: Would getting the Tilt from AT&T at the “no-commitment pricing” of $550 ($450 after rebates) mean I’d get it locked? Like if I bought it from them at this price would I be able to swap in a T-Mobile SIM card and just go from there? Or would I have to hack it to unlock it? Thanks again!
Randall,
Yes it will be locked even if its with no commitment.
The unlocked doesnt have any of the software that ATT puts on it and it has the HTC home page. It comes with a free city from tom tom. It doesnt have the white keys. Comes with other such goodies such as Nero mobile, Quick GPS, Sprite Backup, World Card Mobile.
All of these differences other than the white keys are hackable or software fixes.
I like my unlocked, less work for the look and usability that I want, but if you are strapped for cash, just get the tilt. Its the TyTN II with white number keys and only one or no camera and a little hacking.
Does it work with macs?
Hey man, thanks for the prompt and thorough response. Just a few more questions for you and anyone else that’s reading this:
The HTC homepage — is that the touchflow thing people have been mentioning? And is it something I can like download or hack onto the Tilt?
TomTom charges by city right? And then once you have a city then there aren’t any other charges involved? I just don’t want to run the risk of getting charged for using a different service.
And finally, just to be sure, when a phone is locked to AT&T, that means I can’t use a T-Mobile SIM card right? I can’t believe I have to ask, because there was a time when I was hacking phones and other things that requiredd a lot more extensive knowledge than this. Funny how memory slips when you don’t use those skills.
And again, I really appreciate the feedback.
Randall,
About touchflo, I dont know how you can get it without flashing your rom with the TyTN II settings.
TomTom does not charge other than the cost of the maps. you can buy the maps a city at a time (how much and how are not clear to me since that part of there site has been down for maintenance.) Or you could buy the DVD of the US/Canada maps for $150. It is over 1GB so a micro SD card of 2GB or more is needed. Either way, no monthly fees, although updating maps may be extra im not sure.
A locked phone is for that Carrier only. ATT locked phones will only work with ATT sim cards.
I have herd of it being a law that a wireless provider must unlock a device after a certain amount of time from purchase if requested. I dont know how much time that is and I dont know what they do with the rom, but concevably if you just have a little time left on you contract with ATT, you could get the Tilt, have it unlocked without a hack and then get a T-Mobile account and use the Tilt with them.
Ps. to all who have mentioned ATTs data plans… I was on the ATT site and found an unlimited data plan with 200txt for $20. With Cingular I was paying $40 for data plus $5 for txt. The $40 plan has unlimited everything including ATT TV which im not that familiar with and dont want. So if you are looking into cheaper data plans look into it.
You can run TomTom 6 on this? Screw telenav. Tomtom rocks…
hey,
been running tom tom for 2 weeks now. got my tilt realease day – 10/5. love the damn thing! can’t put it down. it just works – fast. jawbone is also flawless with it. ciccone was right…
forget the ATT crap games and get Zio Golf 2 and you’re set for hours in an airport. anyone got other good game suggestions for this?
TTN is excellent. runs flawlessly, eats battery and john cleese is good but too quiet. grabbed some others off the net but all to quiet. UK Jane voice is best. COMPLETELY customizable software.
anyone else use HTC home plug in?
anyone tried to hack this back to HTC rom?
XDA are very techie about all this. i just need a decent tested rom from a regular user – not a supergeek…
