Want push email on your iPhone? No problem

Well, kind of. How ’bout your email application checking every 5 minutes instead of the minimum 15 minutes? Want it faster? How about 2 minutes? That’s what we’ve been able to figure out with the help of Arminius2. In this simple step-by-step guide you’ll be on your way to fake push email heaven! That BlackBerry is looking worse and worse… Full instructions with pictures after the jump!

First, you’ll need ssh installed on your iPhone. We use Terminal, but this method will work for anyone using a SFTP client. You want to copy the com.apple.mobilemail.plist to your computer. Be aware that in order for this to work, you will have to have auto-fetch on already and not set on manual. The .plist is located in /var/root/Library/Preferences/

Once the .plist is copied to your computer, you’ll need to use a Property List Editor (.plist) to edit the file.

In the .plist you will see the "AutoFetchInterval" at the top. Simply double-click this value.

Then, just change the value to anything you want. It could be 10 minutes, 8 minutes, 1 minute — you get the idea!

Then all you have to do is replace the existing file on the iPhone with your edited .plist. That’s it! You’re so hip you can feel it!

Quick note: this will remain active on your iPhone and you should experience no issues but, there is a but. If you go into Settings/Mail on the iPhone, it will reset the .plist and your changes will be lost. You can feel free to go into Settings and change anything else, just don’t go into the Mail section or this will be undone. That’s it! Let us know how it works for you. We got ours set to 2 minutes and don’t notice a big drop in battery life, if any!

Most of the time my Iphone receives email faster than my BB curve. Push or Pull, who cares as long as you receive mail..

Jason: I actually work in a sales environment where electronic leads are generated from time to time and the first email response gets assigned to it. So in this (admittedly narrow) scenario, it actually makes a difference.

joec: Is this using yahoo push or with the hack described in the above article to check every 1 or 2 minutes?

I don’t know why you aren’t realizing that in most areas, you wont be able to receive ANY phone calls if you have your iPhone connecting to EDGE constantly…

    —-

I am curious about this. I currently have a Treo on sprint and this happens to me constantly – If i’m on the web or using any sort of push email app, phone calls will rarely interrupt the data stream and come through. Meaning that anyone who calls me finds that it goes straight to voicemail and I don’t receive a missed call notification. If they don’t leave a message the call will be a phantom, I’ll never know it happened at all.

This sucks. I have asked a lot of people if the iPhone separates the voice and data streams well and no one has really known too much about it. I’d like to set my mail to be checked at least every 15 minutes if and when I get an iPhone, but I don’t want to be worrying about this issue.

Anyone have any insight on this?

As I read this post, I am repeatedly baffled by the comments about the 15 minute lag for blackberry BIS sevice. This Simply is Not True!! I have the blackberry 8800 with BIS only (this is my private phone with no corporate exchange server attached) and I receive INSTANT email. while sitting at my desktop, mail often hits my blackberry even before it hits my desktop.while at work surfing the internet, I often come across items of interest that I want to save to my home desktop. I’ll email the item to my home email address, which is associated with both my home desktop and my blackberry. The item reaches my blackberry within one second. No lag. In fact, me and my blackbery toting friend frequently use our email as an instant messenger, writing back and forth (we use PIN too, but switch up invariably since there is no difference in timing). Maybe you guys claiming a 15 minute lag on blackberry BIS simply do not know how to set it up. Or maybe your service provider does not support it. I’m with T mobile, and I simply logged on to MY TMOBILE, added my personal email accounts, waited a few seconds for veification, and I was set.

Actually, im a business professional that relies heavily on email (personal accounts such as yahoo and gmail) and corporate email (using exchange)and rss feeds and economic/real estate/stock information. I was using a blackberry for years and had the pearl and curve(on both verizon AND at&t networks in Los Angeles). I have had an iphone 3g for over a month and it is absolutely superior to the blackberry (being addicted to berrys myself i can actually say this…sorry fellow addicts). Superior for personal AND professional use. In fact, i switched to at&t because web browsing was also crucial for me and lets be honest, it sucks on blackberry we just put up with it cuz it USED to be the best out there. But things have changed. The internet is so much faster on at&t now than verizon in the LA area (even when not on the 3g network). And email? Forget Empower and all that extra crap on BB. Full native HTML email is amazing on the iphone! It is like nothing else. One important note here: at&t’s 3g network is not fully implemented in California so i ALMOST returned the iphone cause the service sucked at first (i have been 10 year customer with verizon cause their network was the most dependable for business (crappy phones but if calls were important then you had to have verizon) But like i said, things have changed. I discovered that if you TURN OFF “3G” on the iphone you WILL have great coverage, suprisingly better coverage than verizon guaranteed! I had less dropped calls and more bars unbelievably. Even without 3G the internet is twice as fast as verizon on blackberry. No joke. Turning off 3g by the way only prevents you from using the internet while on a call at the same time (which is very useful at times but not critical so dont worry.

Like i said, I was a huge blackberry addict but try the iphone and you will not be disappointed. As far as push email goes, it works fine if you use ymail/yahoo mail for personal and you can setup any other business or other email if you have microsoft exchange. so it does have push. just not quite as good as blackberry cause you cant just set up any email and get it ‘pushed’ (without having exchange or yahoo). But come on people, i am an extremely busy professional with heavy email use and its never that critical for personal email accounts, just a little cooler comeon! Besides, gmail with update their server to push mail to iphone soon. (its not that iphone cant get pushed mail its a function of the host server). Actually getting mail every 15 minutes is not going to be a deal breaker for anyone using gmail and other personal web accounts. If you do need email instantly, use a yahoo account or get exchange…its something you should have anyway if you’re a power email user or bus professional.

This is not a paid response by apple, yahoo, or other. I am a independent bus professional that also does tech blogging and consulting on the side. Feel free to email me with questions at kuje96@gmail.com (And yes ill get the email on my iphone 15mins after you sent it.)

It seems the only advantage that the Blackberry has over iPhone is Push email because that’s the only feature that they argue about. What about user interface, ease of use (no manual needed, unless you’re hacking), flexibility (apps, you can pretty much have the iPhone do anything from read books, play games, doc and spreadsheet apps, education, productivity), screen size (one of the largest screens out there), arguably one of the better media players around phone or not. It’s clear that the Blackberry’s main function (other than phone) is Messaging and that the iPhone’s is pretty much whatever you want it to be. Media Player, communication device, educational device, productivity device. It’s a have it your way device in a have it your way society.

In response to Peter. Depending on the kind of job you have – being the first one getting that email may make the difference on on how much business you get or how much money you make. So, it is important to get that email as soon as it is send by the other party.

I too am a “business professional” and a blackberry convert. I love all of the iphone expansion and agree that it is far superior to the bb in many ways – BUT – what’s with the 200 email limit on pop email? I have a 32 gig hard drive on my iphone…cmon – shouldn’t I be able to choose how many emails I store on my device?

I get 150-200 emails every day which means I can almost never find an email that I need while out of the office and that really blows.

If this remains un-fixed by our Fab friends at Apple – Ill be forced to go back to the dull but effective bb..
