Apple drops Logic Studio, Logic Pro 8

Apple has just released a long awaited update to their "Pro Tools Killer" application, Logic. The new version, Logic 8, promises a wide array of updates and changes. While previous versions have gone for upwards of $1,000, this new bundle clocks in at just $499. Price drops? Apple seems to have that on lock these days. The new Logic Pro Studio comes bundled with Logic Pro 8, Soundtrack 2, 40 studio quality instrument plug-ins, 80 studio quality effects plug-ins, and a new live performance app called Main Stage. This last bit is intended to compete with popular performance applications such as Ableton Live. It will be interesting to see how well Apple manages to execute an application which is, by all measures, a significant departure from anything they’ve attempted in the past. The GUI is pretty much identical to what we saw in Logic 7 which, depending on your preferences, could be a relief or an outrage. Whatever your preference, you can head over to the Apple store and nab a copy, effective immediately.

    This is great!!

If you purchased Logic Pro 7 on or after August 1, 2007, you are eligible for a free upgrade to Logic Studio …… but I wonder how much the upgrade cost for those who have had Logic for a few years.

The biggest shock for me was the price drop. Logic 7 Pro cost well over $1000 and this is only $499 AND you get more apps! Well done Apple, I will buying this like a mofo.

Actually, the GUI has changed radically and out of all proportion. The entire windowing infrastructure of Logic has been completely overhauled to fit in with Apple’s other Pro applications such as Aperture.

Here’s what the magazine Computer Music have to say about the interface…

“Okay, so clearly the biggest change with Logic Pro 8 is the new one-window interface. A fair few people have expressed concern that this represents a dumbing down of the application as a whole, but we can happily confirm that this simply isn’t the case.”
