HTC TyTN II Unboxing

The HTC TyTN II is probably one of the most anticipated Windows Mobile devices to ever be released. Does it live up to the hype? In short — yes! Talk about a tech lover’s dream, this thing has everything. From a quad-band EDGE/tri-band UMTS/HSDPA radio, to integrated GPS, 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus, 400MHz processor, full QWERTY keyboard, tilting slide out screen, Bluetooth, WiFi; the list goes on and on. In our opinion, this Windows Mobile device is a masterpiece. It’s comfortable to use and hold, extremely fast, and offers as much as we could want and have come to expect in a WinMo device at this time. With AT&T rumored to be getting it soon, the TyTN II should be very well received by customers in the USA, and around the world.

Thanks for the hookup E-Gadget Depot!

Pictures are after the jump while we’re in the process of upgrading our gallery!

UPDATE: Just a few more general impressions from the device…When I reviewed the pre-production model I found that the connection would completely drop and would cause the device to start searching for a network from scratch. I didn’t think anything of this and thought it was due to the not final ROM. It appears the same thing is happening and after some tests I think I know why. The device does switch from EDGE to 3G pretty well sometimes, but it looks like that’s the issue. If I manually set the bands only to WCDMA, or only GSM, it will never drop a connection and lose signal. I’d expect a ROM update to resolve this soon. Also…BlackBerry Connect is awesome on here! It completely syncs OTA to your BES server and works flawlessly. Absolutely poops on Activesync in my opinion. I did notice that it slows the device down a bit which is unfortunate. Anyone got a TyTN II out there and experiencing the same things?

    @test,
That last post sounded like you were trying/are answering my question that is 47 comments up. But yea I figured out that what you just said is what I’m gonna do. (Can’t judge anything until I’ve used it [or make decisions])

    Nice phone.

While I’d love to see Verizon offer a CDMA
version, I’ll happy enough to be able to flash
the xv6800 with one of Helmi_c’s cooked ROM’s
that will be available soon after the xv6800’s
    release.

A cooked xv6800 running EVDO Rev A would make
small hardware differences between that and
    the Kaiser seem ‘very’ insignificant.

As for the iPhone…HA! I’ll buy a new iPod
Touch long before considering the fatter,
clunkier iPhone. Apple makes amazing media
players but a marginal cell phone…at best.

    IMO.

    I have my doubts.
I thought the Dopod 838pro (HTC Hermes) was buggy and laggy.

Has anyone checked out PMcontacts for the WM, provides the same functionality as iphone’s contact scrolling. I checked out the iPhone at the store and after playing around with it for 5 minuted I was thinking hmmmm so what else has it got and seriously I couldn’t find anything exciting about it. It is a nice toy I won’t argue with that, probably one of the best devices out there if you want a PMP with a phone in it. But it just lacks so many things…physical keyboard, mms, gps, push email, 3rd party apps(which provide limitless options)……i’d rather prefer iPod touch if I want an apple device but for a smartphone I’d stick to wm for now.

I agree somewhat.. I think the iphone appeals to women more… I have been using WM device since 2k3 Os.. and also bought several for my wife… she somehow never got into it… never used it to its true potential… then I got her the Iphone.. and she begins boasting about the sub-standard edge capabilities..etc and “how much you can do etc.. ” she loves it.. now there are three in my bed at nights… me, the wife, and the iPhone!

Actually, at the AT&T store that I went to, the salesperson actually discouraged me from getting the 8525, because of the new one comming out (I didn’t know about the 8925), suggesting that I get the new 8925, or Tilt. He slso said that it would be out September 25′th-October 1’st.

I have just seen it working and compared it with my I-mate jam, so far fantastic.
This Tytn-ii is the best so far if you are into WM. I have ordered mine after seen it and working with it for 10 minutes with my mobile sim card. The querty and angled screen is impressive, the GPS works just great,…
Could be better, certainly, if it had VGA and 500MHZ processor, but battery could be lasting half! A nice trade!!!

    Hello Everyone,

I have been tracking down this HTC Kaiser since February, on many websites, eager and lusting for the final date of release. Just the following reasons: this was supposed to be the ONLY phone with secondary camera for video calling, built in GPS, slide-out keyboard, WM6 and the other standard features of a decent PDA Phone. Why would AT&T decide to ELIMINATE the secondary video camera from the 8925 or tilt ? It’s the very THING that would give them an edge on the competition. AT&T already has the video calling service and so far, only two Samsung phones are video call enabled. Now, I think i will go back to hibernation and wake up only after they realize what a STUPID idea it is to get a phone and then crush its features before release in the US market.

I was told that if I purchase the HTC TyTN unlocked I would not be able to use email or web features on the ATT network since the phone does not have ATT network software loaded and the only features usable would be vocie and text message. Is this true, I would hate to have to purchase an ATT watered down model if I did not have to.

The specs I’ve seen on the Tilt 8925 shows a “yes” for voice dialing, however is does not say if it is speaker-dependent or not. I know the 8525 was Speaker-dependent and I’m hoping the Tilt is independent.

    Anyone know?

    Thanks.

If you text and eMail a lot, then stay away from the iPhone. It has the WORST keyboard in the history of mobility…

I have been using the iPhone for the past month. I love everything about it, but IT IS NOT a business phone.

the iphone is 2 years ahead of its competition. This is actually true. Its because the iphone gets to lock in a 2 year cashflow from you, something no other mobile can make you do ;)

don’t match apples with tytn’s (pears) the iphone is a user friendly device with “the looks’ and does satisfy most users. The Tytn II and for example the nokia E90 are for power users and have better specs traded for more weight and lesser looks. So it depends on the user what he/she prefers. I’m a poweruser with a nokia E90 and gladly carry this brick wich does it all!

i agree the E90 should be compared with the Tytn II and the iphone with with the N95 or so

Clearly the iPhone owns in UI just as the iPod and iTunes do.

In Australia we have a proper nationwide 3.5G phone network up and running for ages so I am buying a Tytn II even those it uses Winblows.
If I lived in America where 3G coverage blows but wifi hotspots are predominant I would buy a 8G iPhone.

UI is how i relate to the device OS X is industrial strength unix based.
For me though I will bear a slow clunky UI to have TomTom, MP3 on a 8Gb micro SDHC card and 3.5Gb now. When iPhone has TomTom and 3.5 I’ll buy that.

Just a quick question. Does this thing have WiFi independant of any cellular providers? Theoretically, could I still use the internet at starbucks without paying for cell phone service?

    Thanks

WiFi is WiFi meaning its independant of a cell network for internet access.

Anyone know of a reason why there is no CDMA version of the TyTN II or any other phone with all these features? I’m going to leave Verizon for this thing

Yeah, I’d like to see a CDMA version too, but for Sprint. And without being watered down, like might happen to many US versions.

This looks like a great device…I’ve been thinking of upgrading from my poor MDA…it’s just way too slow, but I like the idea of having the windows applications…(not sure what I would do with out them)
I’m a bit skeptical on the whole “unlocked” phone vs. purchasing through the carrier. I like the idea though. Would you recommend getting an unlocked phone for US/Mexico use?

    Any input would be great!

3 weeks with the new TyTn II (and retired the old I-mate Jam)
It’s impressive!!! In a small device you get:
    A cellular phone
    An Outlook organiser, fully synch
    A camera/video with good quality
An MP3 player, 6GB car for songs & videos
    A GPS, working great
A little lap-top with MS Office
    Internet explorer wherever you are.
All my personl and company e-mails. live!
    Just to start.

    And then,
Great screen, movies look very good in the plane.
Communications by cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, synch with laptop,
Music quality is better than my Ipod.
HTC home screen make things so easy to hadle, stylus almost no needed.
Querty is fine, but there are alternative input methods, foa all tastes.
Great memory, I downloaded few softawres, maps, ringtones, pictures.

Th device itself is veri nice looking and great to handle it, you use your fingers, the track-wheel, buttoms and do whatever needed.

    What would I need else?
A better network, T-mobile (but I’m sure other US carriers), are not there yet, slow to download, mediocre line quality. But in Latin America things get even poorer, we need pacience. Such a great device, so much better than the networks around!

No comparison to I-phone, this is for grown up boys; and about blackberry (I have one), they are reliable but so much boring!

You’ll pay $1000+ with TomTom and a Micro card, but it does worth it.

    Thanks for the feed back…
I’d like a phone that lasts through some technology upgrades…this looks good! I too have Tmobile, not such a great carrier…but hopefully they get there. Did your sim card plug in with out a hitch? No SMS/MMS settings to fix? (I’m not worried about the FAV program) Where is a reliable place to buy this…? And do you suggest any warranties?
