HTC TyTN II Unboxing
The HTC TyTN II is probably one of the most anticipated Windows Mobile devices to ever be released. Does it live up to the hype? In short — yes! Talk about a tech lover’s dream, this thing has everything. From a quad-band EDGE/tri-band UMTS/HSDPA radio, to integrated GPS, 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus, 400MHz processor, full QWERTY keyboard, tilting slide out screen, Bluetooth, WiFi; the list goes on and on. In our opinion, this Windows Mobile device is a masterpiece. It’s comfortable to use and hold, extremely fast, and offers as much as we could want and have come to expect in a WinMo device at this time. With AT&T rumored to be getting it soon, the TyTN II should be very well received by customers in the USA, and around the world.
Thanks for the hookup E-Gadget Depot!
Pictures are after the jump while we’re in the process of upgrading our gallery!
UPDATE: Just a few more general impressions from the device…When I reviewed the pre-production model I found that the connection would completely drop and would cause the device to start searching for a network from scratch. I didn’t think anything of this and thought it was due to the not final ROM. It appears the same thing is happening and after some tests I think I know why. The device does switch from EDGE to 3G pretty well sometimes, but it looks like that’s the issue. If I manually set the bands only to WCDMA, or only GSM, it will never drop a connection and lose signal. I’d expect a ROM update to resolve this soon. Also…BlackBerry Connect is awesome on here! It completely syncs OTA to your BES server and works flawlessly. Absolutely poops on Activesync in my opinion. I did notice that it slows the device down a bit which is unfortunate. Anyone got a TyTN II out there and experiencing the same things?

WOW!!! What a nice Device, I want one NOW!!!!

Looks like a nice device, too bad it doesn’t have the battery life and email of a blackberry. Still waiting for something to rival my curve before I switch back to a WM device.

OK, so in short which one of the two devices pictured (iPhone or TyTN II) would you guys recommend? This is like the decision of a lifetime and I need first hand (from somebody who used both) which device they would recommend/buy for somebody else/themselves.

P.S.
When I saw this headline I had one of those state-of-shock moments where you breathe in and then you can’t breathe out for like 30 seconds, just thought you might like to know.

I see the iphone as the kid phone, for those that aren’t technologically savvy and WM ppl more savvy as there are more (to my knowledge) software to support it. I’ve used Windows devices for over a year and the iphone when it came out, i just feel like the iphone is kiddish, childish. My little sister should use it and the grown ups should use WM5/6….that’s just my opinion.

looks kinda thick especially since I don’t use holsters.
Spec wise it seems pretty hot.

Price is still at 500?

That has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. You clearly have never used an iPhone.

The iPhone might look better in some people’s eyes; technically the Kaiser does all the things tha iPhone can do but Faster, in addition you can install any app. you want and it has GPS and Push e-mail compatibility with exchange and BIS service.
Kaiser wins hands down….unless you want to be Apple biased in which case there is no point having this discussion.

just so you know, you can get blackberry email on the tytn II. there is a site on htc america’s website that allows you to download a wm6 compatible version of bb connect.. in addition to that, you still get the direct push features if you like to roll in the exchange camp.

Research in Motion (RIM) has said a new version of its BlackBerry Connect software will soon allow “select” Windows Mobile 6-based handsets to connect to its push email network as if they were BlackBerries.
RIM claimed the code will provide handsets with a “virtual BlackBerry experience” that presents email, calendars, contact details, memos and so on in the BlackBerry style.

For me it’s not about hating Apple; personally I think Apple products are FENOMENAL at opening up the market. Having said that let’s look at things for what they are.
The iPhone introduced 1 technical advancement (multitouch touchscreen), a sexy design and clearly a very user friendly UI (yet not a very efficient one as shown in many reviews).
Now for some reason the media has went CRAZY over the marketing scheme adopted by Apple, and for some even more oscure reasons even serious reviewers like BG simply refuse to take a step back and judge the iPhone based on FACTS and SPECS.
The Kaiser is simply a beast, HTC will use the usual poor marketing scheme and probably only the tech geeks (like myself) will show an interest in this device.
But if we consider FACTS and SPECS, the Kaiser and the Nokia E90 are truely the two “next gen” Cellphones on the market.
It just leaves me speechless when I see informed tech blogs like BGR, quoting Steve Jobs saying “The iPhone is 2 years ahead of competition” and simply not saying anything about it.
On the other hand it’s good to see that other tach blogs (mostly european and Asians) are simply having a good laugh at this whole iPhone craze.

You meant BlackBerry? BlackBerry are for grown ups.

Specs wise, yes it is a beast. But thats if you want a beast in your pocket. That thing, like all the other WM devices is HUGE! I have to admit I like all the specs though, but too bad its running WM. I hate WM. Who wants to open the task manager 3 times a day and close all the running apps that WM isnt smart enough to close on its own. When it can finally do that I might sell my “kid phone” for something like this. Slightly tempted. But look how huge it is..what 3 times as thick as the “kid phone”… Will def check it out though..

I really don’t think there’s one answer to which phone is “better”, the iPhone or TyTN II. Certainly with the price of the iPhone having dropped, I did consider getting it again- even spending some time playing with it at an AT&T store. The fact that I need a phone and the iPhone is already on sale here certainly counts in its favor. Ultimately though I opted against it because
* It has no keyboard. And the horizonatal virtual keyboard (better suited to my fat fingers) is only available in Safari.
* I love web browsing on my phone. But Safari doesn’t offer an option to reformat pages for the smaller screen. That means a lot of time resizing pages and scrolling around with my finger. I prefer a browser that requires me to only scroll down, not side to side.
* Can’t shoot video.
* Few third party apps. And the apps that are out there may stop working with the next software upgrade, given Apple’s insistance that web apps are the way to go. I don’t want to be limited to web apps.
* No 3G. No streaming internet radio.
But hey, it depends what you use your phone for. I use it for browsing the web a lot, I balance my checkbook on it with a personal finance program, I send instant messages to people (not just text messages). The iPhone shows a lot of promise, and I’ll certainly give the next version a lot of thought. But right now I’m more excited by all the things the TyTN II can do *today*.

You people really have to be kidding me. While the specs on the Kaiser are great some people don’t have use for 3G radios, especially if you dont live in a 3G area. And I havent seen ANY windows mobile device that runs “fast”. Add that with the fact you have to MANUALLY kill processes and while mobile safari crashes alot it is not ANYWHERE NEAR winmo devices crashing, hanging, and needing to be rebooted. And as far as the iphone being a “kiddy” phone cmon folks, is your ipod a kiddy mp3 player? Im not trying to start a fanboy war but there is a reason BG put the picture of the Kaiser next to his iphone. Because the IPHONE is the one he is always using because it “just works”. My .02 cents…

for those of you concerned about closing apps on the HTC, HTC has a cool menu item at the top of the main window bar that allows you to close apps. they also have an ephemris data loader for their gps which greatly improves their TTFF times

Does it have MicroSDHC?

Tytn II looks sweet but, I think I’m going back to Symbian. Like the new Z8 or the US 3G N95. My 8525 kept hanging up when, I added apps as most Windows Mobile Devices.

I really think this is a great phone, and I fully intend to test, and perhaps purchase it once ATT get a hold of it. I may wait to see the iPhone, revision 2. We’ll see.
Regarding iPhone comparisons–please stop. The HTC is in its THIRD or FOURTH development cycle? Let’s see where the iPhone is after three or four revisions for the love of God.
Man–some of you people need to let it go.
Sheesh.

Most of the comments show the incredible media Bias/brainwashing that is going on.
People saying that you need to go through task manager to close apps….that was fixed like 8 months ago…now you terminate processes like in any other device. And Symbian OS never had that problem to begin with.
Another batch of comments….”no need for 3G radio” this one is just pathetic; anything you do on the internet with an iPhone is done faster on a 3G phone. Enough said.
The Roaring Mantra is:”We know the Kaiser (or the E90 and quite a few other phones for the matter) are better then the iPhone….BUT BUT it’s THE iPHONE!!!!! It’s so cool! and slick!
Next thing people are going to start saying they don’t need working push email. Or that having to !!SCROLL!! through your contacts is cool because it reminds you of how many friends you have.
Oh and BTW anyone care to comment the fact you can’t create or edit Office documents on the iPhone? Lemme guess…no need for that one either.
Go Go Steve Jobs!!!!!! WE BE BALLING!!!!
2 Years ahead of the competition!!!!
If I ever start selling anything…i Want the Apple Marketing team.
