Motorola Z8 Unboxing

We’ve been following the Motorola Z8 for a while now, and quite frankly it’s an object of lust for us. It features a "kick-flip" slider function that lets the phone curve to your face instead of awkwardly holding up a regular slider. It actually runs Symbian OS 9.2 UIQ 3.2 which we believe is a first from any handset manufacturer, not just Moto. How does it fare? Pretty good. The phone itself, looks amazing. It’s very well thought out and constructed. The only physical problem we had with the phone, was that the charging ports are at the bottom of the device, and they are in a box that kind of sticks out. So holding with one hand was a little uncomfortable sometimes. We really can’t figure out the OS for the life of us…It tries to be Creme Brule when it should try to be Jello. The keypad is very small and a little cramped, but what really got us is that keys have to be pushed very hard to register a response, and have almost no tactile feedback. It’s a quad-band GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA phone (3G on 2100MHz band only) with a 2 megapixel camera, unique sliding form-factor, a new OS, and a great design. This particle package comes with the great Motorola S9 A2DP headsets, and The Bourne Identity movie pre-loaded onto a microSD card. I think the general impression around here is that we just have to get used the device to make a firm conclusion. So far, we do like it though.

Thanks to CTI Miami for the hookup!

This thing looks like Galvatron’s brain after he got it stuck in the sliding doors being the cart guy who can’t spell at Target

(P.S. Since he works at Target that’s the reason he can’t afford a phone with GODDAMN SPELL CHECK)

    So which is it:

“It’s very well thought out and constructed.”

    Or

“So holding with one hand was a little uncomfortable sometimes. We really can’t figure out the OS for the life of us…It tries to be Creme Brule when it should try to be Jello. ‘Cause you wrote both those things almost right after one another, and maybe I’m dumber than I look but they seem to contradict one another. Is it well thought out and designed, or does it have a crazy complicated OS and buttons that suck?

    I agree. Funny.

The Z8 is…I don’t know. It’s not a bad-looking phone, but there’s just something odd about it I can’t put my finger on.

I personally think it’s a great looking phone and would be ideal for someone looking for a more music-oriented device. Sliders seem to be the best format for that area and this one looks fantastic.

Sorry the first impressions above were a little murky. When I said “very well thought out and constructed” I meant that the build quality seemed on point, and that the phone was very thought out. It has a brand new Symbian OS which is a first for a handset, and in my opinion, I love the look of the phone. With that said, they over thunk this if you will; it tries to do too much.

I don’t care for Moto but, I’d buy this just because it’s mediacentric, the OS, and it’s better than anything offered by carriers that are already out now.

I’m in the US, but I recently purchased a Z8 from the UK, and I love it! It works just fine on T-Mobile USA, including EDGE, and if T-Mobile ever gets around to activating its HSDPA, that’ll work too. Yes, the buttons are a little hard to press at first, but you eventually get used to them. The screen is better than any phone I’ve ever seen; I bought a 4GB microSDHC card and found that it plays movies in HD. The Symbian OS is easy to use and makes the phone into virtually a little computer. The S9 bluetooth headphones which come with it also are wonderful; very easy to use, and I had no idea they also doubled as a wireless headset.

After using the Z8 for a few weeks, I have no complaints for it, but only praise. It’s the best phone Motorola has ever made.

I brought a Z8 over the net from the UK. It was advertised as being unlocked, but surprise! Vodaphone have kindly given me the unlock code, after several lengthy phone calls (grovelling), and for 2 weeks it was superb. Then, it just died, irrespective of numerous CPR attempts. It had been unstable with freezes, reboots, and a wobble in its walk, but it had never imitated a road-kill before. Lucky my V3x is still alive and kicking. More waiting as a repair shop in Germany deliberated, and after some weeks a brand new unlocked phone took up residence in my pocket: Albeit without the SIM cover because they had replaced it without one. More waiting (3 months in total) and, hey presto, my phone is now complete.

After this escapade I could compare the Vodaphone Z8 with a factory Z8. The factory Z8 is noticeably more stable and slightly faster, and there is no annoying splash screens, software or jada jada. However, this was the case on my faulty phone and I cannot in any way suggest similarities with other Z8’s. But, I have my suspicions…

The phone, and a 4 GB card, is awesome for films and music, and together with the wireless headphones, it rox. Way better in every way, especially with the faster modem, than the V3x.

The Z8 is the best phone I have ever had. Thx to Vodaphone for the code and a big thx to Motorola for the replacement.

Maybe it’s just my phone but i’ve had a lot of problems with this model. It freezes at random times, having to charge it almost everyday, flashing random colours when it runs down whilst becoming really hot. as i am writing this it’s turning itself on and off. Im glad i got insurance on it.

I like this phone, so i hope the problem has been fixed
