BlackBerry 8820 on AT&T: Soft launch today?

We just got word that the BlackBerry 8820 might be "soft launching" on AT&T today. That means the unit should slowly be making the rounds into stores, and will possibly be available for direct ordering and/or Premier soon. Pricing is said to be the same as the current BlackBerry 8800, which would put it at $299 after a 2 year agreement. All BlackBerry 8800 shipments have been stopped indefinitely as far as we’re aware. They’re all EOL’d. If we’re lucky, I think we can expect these 8820s in stores by tomorrow.

Thanks, Mursin!

Was at an Att store yesterday and the guy kept talking about a 8803 model that was coming out on Thursday. I kept telling him it was the 8820 but he said that he will be getting that 1 soon.

    Any ideas?

I was on the phone with AT&T to cancel my iPhone and asked about the 8820. They said they didn’t have a confirmed date yet.

I’ve found the local sales people know less than most of us do, untill it rolls into there doors you aren’t likely to get anything good from them.

Reps on the phone can’t say anything, as it says this call may be recorded for quality assurance, it could also be used against anyone leaking sensitive information. It would be ignorant of them to risk there job to inform us of things that they don’t have to.

I haven’t seen anything as far as press releases or any clues from 3rd party retailers. With today being labor day I don’t expect to see anything until at best tomorrow the 4th.

I’ve called three AT&T stores in the metro Atlanta area. Two of them didn’t know what I was talking about, they thought I was talking about the 8800. When I mentioned that this BB had Wi-Fi, they reacted surprised. The third location said they were also aware of that BB and expect a couple of weeks before they had them in stock.

Well its September 4th, and NO sign of the 8820, like Chris said above in his area, no one around here knows anything about it. Than some are saying September 14th, all I know is I want one before my 30day trial is up so I can just swap out across the board.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether the 8820 will be preferable to the Curve for a business person with no problems having a camera? My 30 period on the Curve ends soon and, surprisingly, I’ve used the camera despite not caring about it when I got it. I’d appreciate advice on whether the WIFI is worth having on a blackberry. I don’t surf the web on my BB and my emails are pushed directly to me by my server.

No love from the stores I called in the Atlanta area (East-West, Cumberland, and Atlantic Station.)

Cumberland was out of 8800s comepletely and said the 8820 hadn’t been released. The store at East-West didn’t have an earthly clue what I was talking about. Atlantic Station had 8800s but I already have one so no luck there.

Just called business sales- when asked if the 8820 was available yet, the answer was approximately “Huh? What?” Dude even tried to tell me that the 8820 was Verizon’s version of the 8800. Close, pal. Only off by 10. Sigh.

Sooooo, I called the local store for fun. Same answer! “We don’t carry that- the 8820 is Verizon’s version.” Wow. If this thing is really launching anytime soon, it will be without any training whatsoever of the salespeople. Bad sign.

After being frustrated for weeks from the so called inside scoop from “boy genius”… (yeah right)and after several calls to various stores and ATT customer service/tech support…Called ATT and finaly got someone who knew their own a$$ from a hole in the ground…SO apparently, the 8820 is “being” released in NY TODAY and shipping to other areas starting tomorrow.

I REALLY hope this is the case as like “Michaelsviews” said above…I too am hoping it will be released prior to my 30 day trial.. otherwise guess I will just cancel and wait!

Rep that is used by our company stated maybe the 24th of September, but not to count on it whatever that means. The stores I called in the Dallas/Fort Worth area have not heard of it. They only have the 8800. And we wait somemore.

Check out the following link (below) from AT&T’s website. It lists the 8820 as being eligible for the rebate until 9/15. Therefore it must be released prior to then.

I sent the link off to the business reps I have dealt with and the local rep with the PDF attached. Now I want to hear what they have to say regarding the launch or where these devices are. Last thing I did hear is that all 8800 devices have to be expended before getting the new 8820’s I read that on one of the forums dont remember which on but it does make sense.

I call BS - no one in NYC has it. The guy that I talked to said he was expecting it tomorrow or next week. Is this to cause ‘hype’ or is AT&T just disorganized? I place money on the later.

FYI, and ya’ll can take it for what its worth, I called the Business rep again and talked to the supervisor, and pointed out the PDF document with the rebates, we were on the phone for 20 minutes plus, they said that they have NOTHING saying a release date at all, NADA ZIP, NOPE. They checked everything and even new emails and said the only thing they can figure is the dept that does the rebate forms put it in to cover for the month of September. I have talked to this Manager/Supervisor on several occasions and I think personally there a straight shooter. The local Corporate store in Albany NY has NADA, ZIP on this device. Once again we sit back and wait. But personally since the Wifi and 3G BB is coming out in December “Christmas or New Year” time frame I myself just mite wait for that to happen. Also mentioned was the new Curve for September 24 time frame, DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH cause you will loose the bet on that one as it stands right now. I was told that is definetly NOT going to happen on that date as it stands in Black and White right now.
Also the not shipping the 8820 till all 8800’s are gone, thats gibberish also. So like I already said I got this all from a manager/supervisor who has been with the company for many many years & they have never steered or mislead me before.

Sit back and relax, this could be a while but than again as they stated it could happen on Friday or who knows when.

Are you really thinking the 3G BB is coming out at Christmas time? thats funny, when the wifi berries are not even out yet and its Sept., dont think so. I’m betting on Maybe March or April at best.
