couple things… att has yet to get a solid 3g. period. my partner uses his iBrick for maiking calls and listening to tunes. that’s it. ocean has got so much up on this phone like a keypad i can type on..not to mention the speed of 3g, gps that rocks, etc. have you guys seen some o the hobrew app for thing this(btw, im typing on mhy ocean now)! opera mini is already becoming the new standard. we’re steps away from some seri new sh-t!. i love my ocean. access internet anywhere not jus in wifi hot spots! killer!…

I am interested in the c810. Let me know when it will be available to purchased. And to set the record straight AT&T have had 3G for awhile and I have it and have had no problem. So don’t talk bad about AT&T because all wireless carriers has their problems.

@ allstarecho, I didn’t want to start a GSM vs. CDMA war here. I have no problem with CDMA, I just like the freedom I have with GSM. Plus I travel overseas a lot. Gotta have GSM for that.

Regional carriers are different on CDMA & GSM. I was really referring to the big 4. vCast is a joke at best. Why would I download anything from my carrier when I can add my own music & videos and make my own ringtones, themes, backgrounds, etc.? It’s a no brainer for me.

eh? I put my own music on my phone and I’m on CDMA (Cellular South).

The only advantage I see to GSM is being able to use any phone that accepts a sim card (unless you got an iphone and you’re stuck with AT&T or follow all the hacks (solder this, touch that, run 2 million programs on it to get to this. fuck all that!).

Granted being with a regional carrier instead of a national carrier, we don’t have the best selection of phones, and when we do get the pretty ones, it’s usually a year after everyone else (such as the Motorola Q, just got that, how long’s it been out? exactly!).

I’m VERY happy with my Nokia 6265i CDMA phone and can do anything on it that you people do on your Windows Mobile/Desktop-to-ear phones. Pop3 and IMAP Email, FTP (love this! take pics and upload them to my own server on the go!), IM (AIM/MSN/Yahoo/Jabber/Google), Google Maps, full Web surfing via Opera, remote desktop controlling and using it as a modem to get my laptop online.

I’ll stick with my regional carrier that gives me personal customer service, unlimited calling in and out with all the features (ID, 3-way, vmail, text, etc.), no roaming charges anywhere on the mainland and unlimited data for $66 a month on the first line and $33 a month on the second line. It’s good to live in the Cellular South.

@ Tom, When I say new technology I mean that maufacturers build better phones for GSM than CDMA. CDMA has nothing compared to the Nokia n95 or the Sony Ericsson Cyber-Shot series. A lot of these handsets may not be carried by major GSM carries in the US, but they can be purchased unlocked and used on any GSM network. CDMA can’t do that.

AS for downloading music, most GSM carriers allow you to put your own music on your phone so you don’t have to buy crappy downloads over the air. I like it better this way. Why pay them for music when I can load it myself.

That’s why you see more CDMA music and video downloads, your companies are bending you over, lol.

bigbmc26 The CDMA carriers have been rolling on 3G longer and in more areas than the GSM carriers. I don’t know what you mean my don’t like new techhnology. In the US there are alot more people downloading music, games and video onto CDMA phones than GSM or even 3GSM.

Nice idea, but it’s on AT&T. I hated them as a local carrier (both at AT&T and SWBELL/SBC). Everyone I know that has AT&T (in any aspect of mobility, land line, dsl, etc.) are trying to jump ship.

Besides the SIM chip, I’m not a big fan of GSM anyways. The big two GSM carriers, AT&T and T-Mobile, are slow on deploying 3G technology. In fact, T-Mobile hasn’t officially launched any type of 3G service to date.

The pricing on the SIM chips are a little bit of a scam. The (basically) same technology that is in my old Target Visa smart card costs $30 as a replacement.

Unlike in other countries, GSM is slower to deploy new features in the USA. Even look at the iPhone. The truth is AT&T is so unsure and slow to build its 3G network that they threw the iPhone on EDGE.

Until AT&T stops going on a buying spree (recently Dobson/Cell One) and merging with the next loose Telco it sees, you won’t see a whole lot of steady deployment from them.

That’s also not true. AT&T runs 850MHz on most of the network. There are only a few 1900MHz only markets. One TDMA is shutdown for good, there will be a lot more 850MHz 3G markets than there is now.

OK, you may have me there, but the point is that the predominance of calls placed on the VZ network are carried on the lower, stronger bands… a strategic decision NOT made by ATT a few years ago and their call quality has since suffered accordingly.

As to the VZ’s excitement factor, I too lament Verizon’s over-deliberate approach to the adoption of new device offerings. This was, by the way, was the point of my initial post. On the other hand, having my business calls dropped with regularity is a “thrill” I can definitely do without.

@ Beyoch Bum, I didn’t know we were in Europe? Both tha bands you stated are GSM bands overseas. You might need to do a little more research as well. VZ uses the 800MHz and 1900MHz in the US, not just 800MHz.

I happen to use AT&T GSM/UMTS network and I personlly love GSM. Gives me more freedom. I very rarely have any problems with my servce. I use an 8525. I’ve had the service since 1988, but I’ve worked for the network team since last year. CDMA is a great service for people that don’t like a lot of new technology. It works well, just kinda boring.

You sure seem to feel obligated to call people names. Might I suggest you instead spend your energies doing some research on the subject you choose to so freely spout-off about. Do any checking at all and you will find that the 900 Mhz frequencies used by VZ’s CDMA network are stronger and require the placement of less towers per amount of area covered than do 1800 Mhz GSM networks. The result is measurably clearer more reliable connections.

So, “smart guy” which GSM carrier are you proudly giving your business to AT&T? You and I (and everyone else who has had the misfortune of once using it) know its poor customer service is only surpassed by its God awful signal reliability. Add to this ATT’s poor integration of its legacy equipment to its more modern units and you do indeed get a documented substantially higher rate of dropped calls.

Or, are you a “satisfied” T-mobile user… anxious to celebrate your network’s years late arrival to the 3g game?

Hope that wasn’t your best shot… what else you got?

This actually looks kind of … cool? I may have to play with one though I am quite happy with BB I do tend to stray from time to time when the circumstances are right. The Helio Ocean is a pretty slick device so who knows. And people might dig something that doesn’t look like a flat brick being held up to their head.
Personally I’m a wee bit more excited about the phones Nokia announced in London while I was sleeping, but, anything interesting destined for at&t is nice to hear about.

That’s not really relevant to my comment about CDMA is it? No…it’s not. And no where in the article does it say that AT&T withdrew the ad campaign because of bad towers. Either way, even if someone else (Probably Verizon) does have a slightly better coverage area. No one reading Engadget or Boy Genius should be dumb enough to be using a CDMA phone/carrier. Clearly you’re on the wrong site, you should go check out Fox News, I hear they have a great tech section.

I liked the Ocean and think its a great phone but I don’t know how much better this will be when compared to other WMO phones that can do much more and are meant to be more powerful. HTC Kraizer is going to really take down lots of phones because of its options. Then again price can be a great factor into what phone someone gets.
