Yahoo! Mail gets a host of upgrades

And the email battles continue. Yahoo! Mail is the most recent recipient of some pretty solid upgrades and feature enhancements, with a number of changes expected to go live to the general public today. The biggest change is that the company is embedding free SMS services from within the web-based mail app. This service will allow users to send text messages to anyone in the US, Philippines, Canada, and India, with more countries expected to follow soon. Yahoo is also incorporating support for Windows Live Messenger from within the web page, allowing users to chat with Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live buddies within a single, unified interface. Nothing earth shattering here, but progress is progress….now let’s see how long it takes for Microsoft and Google to follow suit. But wait, isn’t Yahoo! the one behind here? Oh, ok.

They’ve had IM from the Mail interface for several months now.
Nothing new (at least in the Beta Yahoo! Mail).

Free sms have been possible through YIM for quite a while as well. :-/
