iPhone unlocked. For reals!!
Yeah, we know, iPhone unlocking news is so last week, but hang with us here. You know that service we told you about that offered a software based iPhone unlocking solution? Well, it seems that the dang thing works, and works well! Engadget was able to get their hands on the software and try it out themselves. The result? A fully SIM-unlocked iPhone currently running on America’s T-Mobile network. Yeah, baby! The unlock works perfectly, seems to hold up through the software update process, and everything with the exception of visual voicemail works. This opens a world of hurt for AT&T, as the iPhone is one of the only handsets that doesn’t leave the store activated, allowing users to bypass their "exclusive agreement" quite nicely. Are we happy? Yes. Still no word on how much this might cost or when it will be available to the general public, but is any price too high to allow you to use your own SIM? We think not.
Thanks, to everyone that sent this in!

New Jersey teen cracks iPhone network lock
A teenager in New Jersey has broken the lock that ties Apple’s iPhone to AT&T’s wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone ever for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones.

@ test - I live around NYC too and I have had t-mobiles service and I dont see how its really AT&T’s it sucks. Secondly with YouTube dont you need access to the h.264 versions of the YouTube videos? I dont know of any URL for that exactly. I mean maybe its been figured out. One thing though I cant wait till these peoples phones get bricked by AT&T. Also, I think the hardware unlock is better then a software unlock because well obviously Apple cant change hardware via an update. Maybe they can change the way it reads? Im not sure. All I know is that now Apple is going to have to waste time making updates for this instead of making GOOD updates with new features and shit. I hope these hackers die a long slow one…

Could of sworn the article said it was a combo of software AND hardware to unlock it.
Oh well I left Verizon for the iPhone and am glad I did so.

apparently their is a work around to make youtube work, its posted on that same site that Joshua linked to.
The iphone only sees the .264 video so i’m guessing that without ATT in the mix the youtube app just stops looking for the videos. The work around looks like it hacks the app? dont have a clue but that works apparently.
ejay im in Western North Carolina, no Tmobile here but if you have their phones you would be on ATT network around here, thats what i meant. I have heard Tmo is ok and their CS is better than most so i dont see them as any worse than any other.
More sales for Apple here, good news for them. And ATT get some cash from the sales too.

Pay Attention. Their are two different ways to unlock the iphone. One involves the hardware nightmare and the other is a software install that is quite quick according to engadget. This hack and E-Bay could bring some $$$$$.

I don’t see why people keep saying a software update will lock the phone. I’ve unlocked all my blackberry’s and no software updates have locked it. Anyone know of any instance where software updates have done this? Just out of curiousity.

Sick that people can spend all their time to “unlock” an iPhone for what? So they can use it on TMO instead of ATT? Crazy, TMO isn’t significantly better coverage. So it can be bootleg sold overseas? Crazy, iPhone’s are coming to Europe (per reports here) very soon.
I wish someone would spend this sort of time unlocking something users could REALLY use, like the built in GPS on Blackberry’s that VZW locks you out of using!

IF U WANNA USE YOUR UNLOCK IPHONE TO TAKE IT OVERSEAS, MAKES SENSE, BUT TO USE IT WITH TMO USA IS NOT A VERY SMART MOVE, EVERYBODY KNOWS COVERAGE ISSUES WITH THAT CARRIER AND ATT HAS MORE STRENGHT LIKE IT OR NOT HATERS. APPLE IS TAKING THE BEST AND MOST POWERFULL NETWORKS TO SELL THE IPHONE, NO WONDER THEY DIND’T PICK TMO, VZW OR SPRINT, USE UR BRAINS IN SOMETHING MORE PRODUCTIVE….!!!

I have tmobile and I can call my their tech support or customer service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. AT&T closes at 5PM or something? I’m not even off of work yet. The at&T coverage sucks around the Chicago area, which is a huge city. My friend has an iphone with at&t and the service is horrible. I also have 3 other friends with at&T and they get nothing but bad customer service and weak signal. When I call tmobile i’m never on hold for more than 3 minutes.
