Paramount and Dreamworks Animation: We choose HD-DVD
Just when you started to hear the ole Mortal Kombat "Finish Him!" in the background, HD-DVD surprises yet again. Paramount and Dreamworks Animation have both chosen to exclusively support HD-DVD, sending Blu-Ray fanboys into an official tizzy. Not a big deal, you say? Namely, two huge movies this year will now be HD-DVD only: Transformers and Shrek the Third. "Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience," said Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. "I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount." Just when you hoped thought there would be a clear winner, the future now looks as muddy as ever.

Didn’t they just get paid off to say this? I mean cmon I used to be HDDVD fan until I got a blue ray player. While HDDVD’s sound is definately better you cant compare the video from Blu-ray. They should merge the two formats but yeah right that just make life too easy..
The studios did get paid off for the exclusivity… per a story in the WSJ this morning.
All this means for me is that I will be further delaying my purchase for both hardware and software. I was ready to jump into a BluRay machine as I can’t stand Toshiba….
Stinks
I love watching from the sidelines since I have both a xbox and a ps3, so i can buy whatever titles I want and if there is an eventual winner, im sure the future combo play will make sure none of my disc become obsolete.
fffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkk you paramount. i dont care who wins…as long as there is a winner…cant wait for xmas 2015 when we have one format
This is one reason why I bought a PS3…cause it plays both.
@Jeff B
You’re kidding, right?
Naw, that was also a high point to why I bought my PS3. Besides the quad-core that runs at 3.0Ghz/core and that it’s f**king sick.
I just said f**k it and bought a terrabite hd and got to ripping. It is all going digital. That is the format they are going to settle on.
Now that’s what I call a good idea now how much and where are those things…
Please people… educate yourself!! PS3’s do not play both formats… only Blu-ray. As for comparing visuals of one disc format to the other… THEY BOTH OFFER 1080P! Has nothing to do with the quality, the studio can compress the movie using several different codecs to put on the disc. The visuals will look different depending on what equipment was used during the filming process, but will look identical on either HD DVD or Blu-Ray. Don’t really care which format wins, especially since digital downloads will eventually take over, but for your sake I’m pulling for HD DVD because it has the same high quality video and audio and it is cheaper to produce for studios than Blu-Ray. Not only the disc’s, but the hardware too. The savings will be found in your pocket, not Sony’s who went against the DVD forum group to create their own format.
i meant eight-core at 3.0Ghz/core not quad…eight.
Jeff, I’ve got property to sell you…
