Verizon gets the HTC Vox incarnated as the UTStarcom SMT5800

‘Tis the season for product releases, and we’ve got a couple of gems destined for Verizon’s network to share with you. First up is Verizon’s take on the HTC Vox, known from here on out as the UT Starcom SMT5800. This is, as you may have surmised, the CDMA version of HTC’s slick Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition QWERTY slider. It’s small, light, and quick, with no touchscreen to slow you down (or speed you up, depending on your preference). The SMT5800 will sport Ev-DO out of the gate, upgradeable to Rev. A whenever the head honcho’s see fit. Other specs include a 2 megapixel camera, 128 MB of flash/64 MB of RAM, microSD slot, and Bluetooth 2.0. Nothing revolutionary, but it’s a solid addition to Verizon’s steadily growing Windows Mobile lineup. Yeah, baby! Check out a full res shot of the handset after the jump.

Thanks, Omie!

Seems like someone got a Verizon roadmap and is making this into multiple posts instead of one roadmap post ;)

    I’m super confused…

I thought the SMT5800 is the xv5800 (aka HTC Libra or s720) that could be released as early as mid August, considering Verizon has supposedly been testing this phone for weeks, if not months. I’ve seen dates for Aug 20, along with the q9m.

The specs listed here are exactly those of the Libra/xv5800, but the pictures are completely wrong. The vx5800 is – like the specs here say – a Windows Mobile Standard phone. I’m not sure what this phone is, but it’s not the vx5800/smt5800, and it sure isnt running WM Standard. Pictures of the alleged xv5800 are all over other forums. Am I completely wrong, or is BGR???

I like this phone as much as the cingular 3125(in unique style) but isn’t it a bit late in the game at least when compared to att or even tmo. I would though consider this phone if I switch to verizon.

WTF, what is this fugly thing here! This is not the Vox. The Vox is a phone with a beautifully designed case, not this funny looking thing. Come on VZW, at least keep the damn original design and stop F’ing things up!

This has to be wrong. The device doesn’t look anything like the Libra that Telus has, and the photos show it running WM5 PPC phone edition instead of WM6 smartphone ed.

The images also look more like renderings.

Yeah- what is the dealy here? That is a WM Professional home screen, not a WM Standard home screen. If it’s just Verizon’s version of the Vox, then it’s obviously WM6 Standard, but wut in the hades is up with the home screen?

My guess is the person doing the promo art had a photo of the phone and a library of “Windows Mobile” screenshots from which to choose. Note how the corners of the screenshot are covered by the phone housing and the softkeys at the bottom of the screen are completely missing because the screenshot isn’t properly scaled. It looks like artwork by someone whose job was to get the image done quickly and who didn’t understand or care about the technical details of different flavors of Windows Mobile. For the same reason, it’s common to see printed store ads with screenshots of Mac OS on a computer that is obviously a PC.

Just talked to a VZ Corporate rep. All he said was “soon”. He said he’d played with the phone and really liked it and looked forward to seeing what improvements they made on it. He didn’t give any other details, not even confirming or denying the Windows Standard system.

Personally I’m hoping for the touchscreen upgrade.

yea I’m not sure this is correct. I think it’s this one that’s coming out.

It makes more sense since it’s fugly and it’ll be kind of a let-down, which is pretty much what Verizon is all about.

I purchased the SMT5800 but I am very disappointed in it. It slides open very easy and the keyboard is not very user friendly. I ended up going back to the enV after a couple days.

I dont know what you guys are saying, i was the first person to buy it from my verizon store and i love it. Don’t count on getting quality ringtones online because the quality’s terrible, but otherwise this phone is sick. To the first comment, I had a LG V before this, and all my contacts were transferred no problem. Your cell phone guy’s just a moron. And yeah the keyboard isnt too great but i’d rather have it then an enV that everyone on the world has.
