T-Mobile’s first 3G phone, the Samsung t639, coming in less than a month

Yeah, you heard it here first, folks. Barring any unforeseen roadblocks, T-Mobile’s 3G UMTS network might be launching within the month. How do we know this, you might ask? The Samsung t639, that’s how. The t639, set to drop on September 10th, is T-Mobile’s first 3G equipped handset offering. The phone sports a 1700 MHz UMTS radio, allowing it to access the fastest data network ever offered by the boys in Pink. The phone itself is pretty standard mid-level fare, sporting a megapixel camera, Bluetooth, microSD slot, and more. When a highly anticipated network revision is on the line, however, the details don’t seem to matter as much. There is a possibility that T-Mobile will launch the phone prior to launching the UMTS network, enabling high-speed data a bit later down the road, though. That said, there have been "early-fall of ‘07" 3G launch rumors around for quite some time now, so were guessing this means that all systems are pretty much good to go. Welcome to the party, guys. It’s been lonely here without you.
Thanks, tmophonehome!

K, I think you’re missing the bigger picture.. it means when the 9xxx series drops there’s a good chance Tmo customers will able to use the 3G band, not just EDGE!
2 days of back-to-back great news for Tmo customers delivered by the BGR team. You all are killing these other tech sites right now!

this launch doesn’t mean anything about network turnup. they can launch the phone to run the older network for now.

Does anyone know or have a way to find out what 3G band Samsung Q1 Ultra CMXP model will support? Will it support TMO’s 1700? Samsung Q1 Ultra CMXP version has HSDPA and is set to release tomorrow, 8 15 2007
Thanks!!

I’ll buy anything 3G from T-Mobile. But they have a nasty habit of crippling their Samsungs. Would they release 3G phone that won’t let you install Google maps and opera mini?

And that my frinds iw er a bit of cell phone phreaking comes nto baly with a bit of hacking. Wonder if they are releasing a umts aircard? Ant tha suxor that. They ar usingg 1700 mhz when they could an should be using 1900mhz for umts instead of uma this will creat a burden for manufactures as well.

Why would they pay extra for a phone with a 3G chipset and the extra bulk it adds if they didn’t want to release a 3G network?

If you do a search on the site (tmo site) using a google toolbar as a search site you can find a pdf file talking about them setting up a 3G network. They had initially set it up in NYC but I assume that with the launch of the 3G phone they will do it nation wide. I could be wrong and misread the document.

The FCC today has re-approved the Samsung T639. The model was originally approved as a quad-band GSM phone, however that approval was revoked and now the phone has been re-approved with WCDMA 1700 support. Support for this band as well as the model both indicate the phone is destined for T-Mobile USA. The T639 appears to be a clamshell phone with quad-band GSM/EDGE and Bluetooth in addition to 3G. No additional details are available in the documents approved today. Neither T-Mobile nor Samsung have announced this phone yet.

Doesn’t suprise me that T-mobile will launch phones before the network is ready. They did the same thing with the nokia 3220 I had the phone a good month or so before tmobile anounced it would work on there new edge network. Same was true with the blackberry pearl with Myfaves.

Does anyone have any info on UMTS? I heard it was suppose to be a faster version of 3G for GSM based networks. Also will Blackberry’s be able to take advantage of the faster network?

Hmm, I wonder if my grandfathered $20 total internet plan will still apply with it.
Heck, I got that plan when it was only GPRS and later the plan remained intact when EDGE came out, so I can hope!
Heck, I’m afraid to even call t-mobile regarding ANYTHING for fear of losing that plan. My latest phone is an unlocked N95 so they didn’t have to know about that either.
Shhh…. don’t tell them now!

Does this mean the new T-Mobile 3g (UMTS) Network will be based on the new AWS (1700-2100Mhz) Spectrum that T-Mobile won last year?
If so how much better (bandwidth/penetration) will it be then the existing 1900Mhz networks??

T- Mobile will launch its 3G by May 2008. It is not possible before that as the 1700 spectrum is not available yet.
First markets to Launch will be New York and Miami.

3G access is a service that is suppose to replace 2.5G edge! Now wouldn’t you think all who pays for full internet access be able to achieve 3G internet! If your phone have edge then tuneup by Tmobile would require your phone to jump .5G right? Many HTC unlock phones come standard 3G including its very own Tmobile Wing. Too bad it runs GPRS/EDGE/WiFI…
