FCC clears HTC Iris for arrival

Hold on to your hats, boys and girls. We’ve got a new HTC handset for you, and it’s called the HTC Iris. Also known as the HTC S640, it has just been cleared for American airwaves by the FCC. The device, which bears more than a passing resemblance, both in specs and appearance, to the upcoming Palm Treo Gandolf (a resemblance that could be more than skin deep, given HTC’s manufacturing contract with Palm) isn’t the most feature packed phone we’ve seen. The handset sports an EV-DO Rev. A CDMA radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS in the connectivity department. A small QWERTY thumboard adorns the front of the candy-bar style phone, with a 2 megapixel camera and 400 MHz processor rounding things out. There’s a 2.4" 320 x 240 screen, 256 MB ROM/64 MB RAM, all running atop Windows Mobile 6 Standard. No word on price or availability, but a Sprint/Verizon appearance is all but assured at some point in the future.

HTC is cranking out devices right now and they all appear to be fully equipped. Im guessing this one will be cheaper (than Tilt) but it still has rev. A, gps and wifi. HTC looking good.

Does this have real GPS or the neutered, useless kind found in the Mogul and the Q?

Looks like a Palm but it’s not. And this thing is so damn ugly I would be surprised if anybody bought it to begin with.

Yeah it is damn ugly. Thats always been palms problem with smart phones IMHO. HTC should have made it more attractive, it will keep me from buying it. My Sumsung 1-730 is over 2 years old and still more powerful than new PPC’s coming to market. Sigh, no reason to upgrade.

The referring page sites it as gpsOne, aka “assisted gps”. I believe it is what you would call the “neutered kind”.
