If you are going to buy a smart phone with GPS then make sure that it’s Internet enabled. The combination gives you access location based services which are going to boom over the next few years. bb browser is not the dash’s browser. and neither is comparable to the pc browser. i think the browser and the processor are going to throttle the speeds while browsing. they are out in the wild im sure youtube will have 8820 browsing videos soon.

yea I’ve seen many people say that the wi-fi doesn’t help because the browser sucks for BB..

well there is a video blog on youtube showing a guy using a T-mobile Dash on his Wi-Fi.. loaded right away..

Then he used the EDGE network to load a page and it took serveral minutes and still had not finished..

So this tells me that Wi-Fi can make the difference between saying this browser is garbage or this works great..

You’ll see the same thing on a home computer between dial-up and cable..

sorry but the browser on the BB is garbage when you want speed or good rendering. wifi will only make that more evident. Nokia’s looking better all the time.

I just watched a T-Mobile Video blog for the Dash showing the Wi-Fi in the Dash being used to access the web browser and effectivly browse the internet, All of this done without having a SIM card present in the device eliminating the capability of celluar access or authentication of the device to any data plan related to your carrier service.

I’d like to see a similar test with the 8820, to clarify the questions of it’s Wi-Fi. Maybe some kind people from UK, Germany, or Spain could make a similar video blog of the blackberry 8820.

this sucks. I hate att and tmobile is F’n around with the phone service. I just heard from my inside gal at tmobile that the new release for the curve is October. WTF? how long most I deal with a crappy BB while att has the iphone and the curve. I mean I dont want to join the dark side and drop my call every second, so TMOBILE COME ON, get your shiet together AND SAVE ME AS A customer!

I am looking for concrete technical data on how the Wi-Fi in the 8820 is going to function.

Right now it appears that it will still require the blackberry data plan you purchase threw your service provider and it will provide a alternate means of accessing your blackberry data plan, this putting the only advantage to this if your office is in a bomb shelter or otherwise unfriendly environment.

Even sitting at home with your typical wireless broadband router you are simply just going to be routing your data via your router rather than threw your providers cellular network. Meanwhile eating up your battery power and still not escaping having to purchase a data plan.

This effectivly keeping your service provider in your pocket getting you to pay another $50 bucks more or less each month to access data over an internet connection you are paying for as well.

So they have crippled down a technology so that they can still profit from other services that might not be needed any longer if they didn’t limit it’s capability.

Sounds like an over complicated solution to a problem that wasn’t really much of a problem to begin with.

I hope I am wrong, or I hope that the Wi-Fi gets opened up so that you can use your blackberry no differently than you would expect of a laptop computer.

I agree with BG on his comments. These slides are definitely par for the course for not only RIM but practically every carrier in the wireless market space as well. Often times, these presentations are made fairly early on and usually carried through release, so information can be skewed and incorrect, such as the 2.0MP camera for the Pearl refresh. FWIW, one carrier recently quoted their Curve (yet to be released) revision as having a 1.3MP camera when it’s being released with a 2.0MP camera.

Pearl 2 for CDMA, Finally!!
CDMA Needs More Love!

Don’t you guys think that CDMA has better service in the US than GSM? I mean, lets be honest, does AT&T or TMO have better phone coverage that Sprint or VZW? And the data is obviously faster on CDMA.

Of course GSM has better phones, the carriers can sell them all over the world. But with the exception of a few obscure areas, can anyone honestly say GSM service is better than CDMA service??

Then directly below it shows the 8820, okay..
then the 8310…… hmm
then the Pearl 2, alright..

wait.. the 8310 is headlined under a document stating here are devices enabled with Wi-Fi.. the 8310 doesn’t mention having Wi-Fi.. that seems like a pretty big mistake.. huh.. *Shrug* must be another up to par mistake.
