International iPhone and BlackBerry Devices

Fresh on the heels of our friends at miblackberry.com, we were curious and decided to look at our BGR community visitors to get an idea of the more interesting devices being used to browse the website. For those not aware of what a browser user agent actually is, it is the standardized identity of your browser to web servers. This helps with the serving of webpages for certain browsers, amongst other uses.

For example, a standard user agent for Internet Explorer 7.0 would show up as:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3

From a website statistics standpoint, this information can be used for trending analysis to cater content to certain browsers. In recent years, with the rise of mobile web usage from devices such as the iPhone and BlackBerry, it can be used to offer streamlined content tailored to the carrier networks and mobile device browsers (WAP content, for example). With that said, we obviously have a different reason for looking at the data being provided, albeit usually for our own personal amusement and curiosity. Listed below are some of the more interesting user agents that have visited BGR. Check them out, after the jump!

BlackBerry 8820 – BlackBerry8820/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1

As you can see, there has been a nice assortment of visitors in the form of future BlackBerry devices and OS releases, as well as the angelic Euro-centric Jesus Phone. These also confirm the concrete existence of these devices, aside from previous gathered word of mouth from reliable sources.

I don’t think you can consider it concrete evidence of current or future devices since the brower’s user agent can be changed/hacked to be pretty much anything you want. There’s even an extension for Firefox that allows you to change you user agent to something else entirely. So while it’s decent evidence it also it could be someone just looking to mess you up or to start a rumor — especially now after you told them you’re looking at it. Just my $0.02

This is kind of like tag surfing on the internet for images taken with new phones. I guess that Jim and Steve should ask their employees from surfing the site with their shiny new test phones.

This is actually kind of funny given RIM’s notoriety of preventing (or at least discouraging) their employees from using unreleased products publicly. I guess you’ve got a following of people up in the Great White North BG. Though I guess some of those units could be in the hands of carriers evaluating them as well…

funny, Canadians rule the world yet you don’t realize we do it through blackberry technology… we have cracked your defenses, we will implement maple syrup in all your morning pastries…. seriously, they do hide them… I was at lunch the other day and a rim employee had his 91XX out…. he put it away in a hurry when he realized I was intelligent. It wasn’t Mike, he has big hair….
