BlackBerry 8310 is the “Papa Bear” and the BlackBerry Pearl 2 (Comet) goes to AT&T

Our beloved "Papa Bear" BlackBerry…it’s great to finally see you, but there’s one problem — we thought you’d have GPS and WiFi — what do you mean, no? Well, here’s the deal BlackBerry fiends. According to one of our very friendly RIM informants, the BlackBerry 83xx (Papa Bear) is in fact the BlackBerry 8310 and will just have GPS. As it turns out, there simply wasn’t enough space to fit both in the current case design, and frankly who could blame them. The BlackBerry Curve is the smallest full QWERTY BlackBerry, and a staff favorite here at BGR. We are sooo not done, though! Who’d have thunk that AT&T would get first dibs on the BlackBerry Pearl 2 (Comet)? Release date is still looking like the 1st of second week in September, and AT&T should be the lead carrier. They’ve got like 8 different colors for it! We also heard T-Mobile will be getting new Pearl colors too. I don’t care if you’re in a meeting at a Fortune 500 company, or taking care of Diddy’s electronic assistant search, put them ’Berrys down and yell "We love you BGR BlackBerry informant!" as loud as you can. Feel better? We do too.

GPS is great in a device for people with active schedules. Just because YOU don’t have one, doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t. GPS is a godsend. When I am not home and I have a free hour or two, I sometimes get friends or clients that want to spend time. I can’t run back home to get directions and then come back. If we feel like Sushi, I love the option of searching businesses around me for sushi places without having to call 411 or go home. Bring on the GPS!

“I love it when people get offended at someone else’s spending habits.”

I have realized that most people that complain because “real people with real jobs and bills don’t have money” usually work minimum wage, and has never tried to push themselves into a better situation, so they blame everyone around them. I’m like you … I can spend $600 on an iPhone if I wanted to. And I have a real job with real bills and real mouthes to feed (kids). I can do this because I actually worked my butt off to put myself through college, work two jobs just to get experience while I was going to school, and pushed myself. He is just jealous.

i dont believe the reason people are “whining” about the cost of the device, etc., so on and so forth, what i believe most are concerned with by purchasing an unlocked device is support from their carrier and should there be a defect, warranty issues. i had an n95 and i couldnt get the settings correct for tmo because of this, they couldnt help me. same with the prada phone.

as for wi-fi on a blackberry, im particularly excited for this because i get to finally utilize skype. itd be great to gab whilst on data.

trust, its definately not for the browser. that shit blows.

Oh Lord! I have never understood the appeal of GPS! To me GPS is the automatic transmission of the early 2000s. We are raising a generation of youngins who have bo idea what that third pedal on the left is for and couldn’t find the X on the treasure map if their first born’s life depended on it.

Plus i dont see how GPS can adjust for context. If the main route you want is not viable due to a major traffic jam, GPS might be able to give you an alternative, but what do I know?

Oh I realize SoCal has a lot of freeways and they can be intimidating to some, but it’s hard to miss an exit off the freeway since all our freeways give you the next three exits upcoming.

I absolutely agree with you - it’s just envy, pure and simple. Spending $600 on a phone that would be used towards earning a living sounds like a wise investment. If he wanted to argue about the merits of an iPhone vs. a BB, that’s one thing. but the moment he cited the price and whined about “real bills”, I knew it wasn’t anything substantive.

so basically what im hearing is that you “hard workers are just simply justifying the fact that you went and blew $600 on a phone which is cool denial is a bitch, but my point to mr. sparky was that I said “EXTRA” meaning more to you billionaires “LMAO” out there i.e.: the Nokia e90 cost $1149.00 msrp, im guessing if it were on a network with a 2 year contract it would be drastically cheaper…. correct me if im wrong…..

And to add insult to injury I was replying back to Matt’s original comment & was being facetious when I put the $600 the comment just so happened not to fall where it was meant to be…

“Ok, I can feel sorry for the Verizon people because I am one of them and they take forever to release anything, but I am tired of T-mobile and At&t customers crying about something being released for the other ones network…….. unlike with verizon you can buy any phone that works on those gsm bands and just pop the sim card in….. so if the pearl 2 or 8310 is coming out on at&t spend the extra $200 and go buy an unlocked one and pop the sim card into it, this is an option that those of us on verizon do not have so quit whining!”

No I’m not justifying anything. I budget $150 a month for gadget savings among other things like club money. After a while of doing that you have a lot of free money left. Its like toy money so why not drop it on a nice phone once a year? I’m not a billionaire, I have just done the right things and worked my ass off growing up to deserve this. Maybe instead of complaining you should work harder to better yourself and get a better job.

So the 8310 will remain a 2.0MP camera? Same goes for the 8320?

On Blackberry forums, someone posted a site picture of the new 8310. Is this the true colors for the Vodafone 8310? That’s a sweet color!

First off, the three of yall arguing about your jobs/income/bills is childish, im sure you are all more mature than that. This is the comment section of a Blackberry post; hardly the place to argue over stupid things.

Now back to the real reason why everyone is here: I’ve personally never had a blackberry, is it worth waiting for the VZW Curve, or should i grab the XV6800 when it drops?

Ok, all you you people are nutz!!!!!
All you do is complain. If you think about it. There is nothing holding you to ANY carrier besides some lame duck ETF fee. If you want out, you can get out. Pay your ETF, and get the BB of your chioce with AT&T.
YOu verizon and T-mobile people are something else. Sitting up here whining like 2 year olds.
IF THEY ARE NOT GIVING YOU WHATY YOU NEED…LEAVE, or open upi a second line with another carrier.

That’s what I did. I got tired of waiting on Sprint to get new phones and stuff, so I went to Cingular and goT A new line of service.
That was a year ago, and Now I have a Pearl and I’m going to get the Pearl 2.

Look I don’t have anything to do if your wife controls your money or you are some kid living with your mommy and daddy. GET YOUR OWN MONEY, so you are the one who calls the shots!

Stop whining and do something about it!

this has nothing to do with carriers, it has everything to do RIM’s horrible update schedule.
For you to say “stop whining” is stupid as people can make criticism for any reason they deem necessary. RIM’s policy of stretching out every model to maximize profits is the problem, it keep s them from releasing the full model till the sales of the base model levels out, do you see this practice in any other industry?

First, people complain about RIM not releasing units fast enough because they try to stretch out the current line. THEN whenever they do release a lot in a row you still complain about them not releasing units. In a very short time they released pearl, curve, and 8800. All different devices. Then, within a short amount of time they release updated versions of all of them? How is this different than any other manufacturer with a flagship product? Palm has had Treo for years and for the most part they are all the same devices, just updated slightly with exception of the windows version. You all will complain about anything.

Personally, I’m stoked to have wifi use all over campus and still get the perks of the BB instead of being forced to use a slideout keyboard, wm or a wifi card w/a treo. The slim profile and wifi are so damn attractive. mmmm. . . blue devil fa life!

you do realize your complaining about us complaining.

the complaint is that they never release a full featured device, the HTC, Nokia and others all have full featured phones (wifi, gps, camera, full browser, some 3G),RIM CHOOSES to stretch out the lines because the Corp. clients dont complain. The consumers that they are now going after have many more choices and therefore we will complain about the restricted product line. It has nothing to do with releasing new phones, its releasing ones with all the features not dragging them about for 2 years.

What? How is the curve not a full featured phone?? It has all of the features the others do minus video recording, and maybe even GPS. I mean seriously, most phones DON’T have GPS built in. I think you are obsessing over a select few phones and are saying .. “oh gee I wish my phone was like that.” so you go on your tyrade.

Blackberry will never (in near future) get video recording for good reason. In the BB forums, there was a post by a RIM employee stating that it is not that its not possible, its that the software is designed on purpose to remove video recording because BB is a government issue device. And adding video recording will lower its standing with them, and other corporations.

    who cares about video recording?

    full featured right now:
wifi, gps, camera, full browser (not locked down), 3G. Their are plenty of pdas out there that offer these features.

Please RIM is not even 50% corp/govt now, that might have been true 3 or 4 years ago.

There’s nothing revolutionary about these features, they have been in Blackberries for awhile now but RIM refuses to release a phone with more than one or two(8820, 8310), because of revenue not because of tech.

Dude! Wifi is coming out with the 8820 and GPS in the curve! I want you to list more than 3 readily available phones that have BOTH a full wifi and GPS. RIM BB is still a government issue phone. Sure they are not even 50%, especially since they went mainstream. But fact still remains that the government is still a huge (and most influential) client of RIM.

That why they keep seperate models that are corp. oriented. the 88xx are their corp models without the camera. The 88xx can have GPS and Wifi and the 83xx can have Camera and GPS and thats all. Apparently they did not design the cases to fit the components.

The HTC Kaiser, 3G, GPS, Camera, Wifi.
The O2 XDA Zinc 2mp Camera 3G PDA Wifi Phone
The Nokia N95, wifi, 3G, wifi, Camera, GPS
    The SONY ERICSSON P990I “same”

    just to name a few.

You have listed huge phones. All of those are freaking big. Let me rephrase …. show me a full feature phone that keeps the slim size of if curve or the 8800. Those huge phones are not an option for me. Another post on BB forums say that RIM was having trouble putting all of those features into a form factor the size of the 8800 or curve.

Personally, if the phone is big … I can do without those features. It has to fit un-noticeable in my pant pocket when I am dressed for a meeting.

a few cm difference are no problem for me, its bad design to make a form factor you will be usings for multiple years and not be able to fit what you need into it. I have no problems withthe sizes of these devices and neither do the millions of people using them or similar sized devices.
