BlackBerry 8310 is the “Papa Bear” and the BlackBerry Pearl 2 (Comet) goes to AT&T

Our beloved "Papa Bear" BlackBerry…it’s great to finally see you, but there’s one problem — we thought you’d have GPS and WiFi — what do you mean, no? Well, here’s the deal BlackBerry fiends. According to one of our very friendly RIM informants, the BlackBerry 83xx (Papa Bear) is in fact the BlackBerry 8310 and will just have GPS. As it turns out, there simply wasn’t enough space to fit both in the current case design, and frankly who could blame them. The BlackBerry Curve is the smallest full QWERTY BlackBerry, and a staff favorite here at BGR. We are sooo not done, though! Who’d have thunk that AT&T would get first dibs on the BlackBerry Pearl 2 (Comet)? Release date is still looking like the 1st of second week in September, and AT&T should be the lead carrier. They’ve got like 8 different colors for it! We also heard T-Mobile will be getting new Pearl colors too. I don’t care if you’re in a meeting at a Fortune 500 company, or taking care of Diddy’s electronic assistant search, put them ’Berrys down and yell "We love you BGR BlackBerry informant!" as loud as you can. Feel better? We do too.

This is why I’m just about done with both Verizon and BB. As someone who uses their phone as much for personal reasons as business, I see no advantage to spending $45 additional each month for stripped down BlackBerrys. PUSH email isn’t the end all/be all.
So, yes, RIM - as a consumer, I hear you loud and clear. You don’t need my business. Which means HEL-LO iPhone!
Anybody want a new 8830?

What ever happened to the Verizon 8330 and their version of the pearl 2???? Is Verizon still planning on releasing them?

You all are a bunch of babies…its not like it wasn’t reported along time ago that there would be different versions of the 83 series. so why did u jump on the very first one that came out?
There was a time when bbs came out once every two years and now u all complaining about it being too many.
Plus u people dont understand that not everyone needs all those features so why not put out differant kinds at differant price points. i Can guarantee the 8310 is about 100 bucks more then the 8300 and the 8320 will be more expensive as well.
even so ill be getting the 8320 for wifi( to improve my reception at home) and ill buy a mni gps puck (re:holux) and boom problem solved

@eJay, T-Mobile won’t be ‘pwnd’ by AT&T on the Pearl 2. There will simply be two versions of the device. Expect TMO to release the 8120 (Pearl+WiFi) likely in the October/November timeframe (will comment further when I have conrete details). AT&T will be releasing the 8110 (Pearl+GPS) flavor of this refreshed device.

ok vor the n00bs whinning about sprint, an verizon not getting any love. heres a solution DROP’EM! The reson cdma carriers get next to no new phones is simple. the CDMA market is prety much limited to the US. shor thers a carrier in canada an verizon works in north korea thats. it!. it’s a smaller market manufactures can’t make any money In fact it costs MORE money to make CDMA handsets cause you have to take the same circut board or make a totally new one. the eprom costs more and you have to write a wholed differnt type of firmware.
GSM is a more popular format because SIM card it’s more user frindly and convinient.
More ofer your not @ the mercy of a retarded CSR and the carrier.
BTW
Apple dosn’t make a better phon it makes a 3 year old phone with everything embeded. sorry steeve jobbs> I will take the highway. i don’t like your way of telling me what i can/can’t do with my phone.
aslo regarding tmo id rather wait a few years or buy an unlocked phone than pay Att’s astronomical rates.

Jibi or BG - any info on Verizon releasing either the Pearl 2 or the 8330?

In reference to Galvatron:
1) I don’t know where you get this statement about eprom costs. It doesn’t even make sense. The cost is associated with the CDMA/EVDO processor, the memory is totally independent. And the processor costs are negligible in reference to the rest of the phone.
2) Yes, you have to make a totally different phone, but if you already have devices using EVDO, you just modify them. This is how it is done with GSM handsets.
3) Verizon is pretty big. Companies will not ignore that market.

It seems that you also forgot the seveal hundred million that are on GSM in eurpoe and many other parts of the world where RIM sels their service. So when you have T Mobile USA and Europe, Voda, O2 Orange and so on out there those numbers and BB subs are much more than CDMA will ever dream about. Also in the past 6 months RIM has expanded to toher markets which are also GSM so business sense says cover the larger market first then follow with the other when time permits.
No to BG and Jbi thanks for the info and it would also be appreciated if a time frame for the 8310 is mentioned (that is if known).

Who said “everyone”? I believe I was referring to myself in regards to the iPhone. And guess what, sparky, there are those of us with “real lives and bills” that can afford an iPhone and utilize it in those lives.
I love it when people get offended at someone else’s spending habits.

What the f*** is going on with Nextel releasing a BlackBerry. You wanna talk about Verizon or T-Mobile being late, Nextel can’t anything but hybrid phones that look like bricks. Its been 2 freakin years since they released a BB, they have one stinkin Blackberry to choose from. Does anyone have news on a Nextel BlackBerry or am I just pipe dreaming. Boy Genius I need an inside tip, let me know what you know because I’m ready to jump ship.

To me GPS is absolutely required. Google Maps doesn’t give you voice prompts so you’re forced to look down at your tiny screen to read the directions — and if you ever stray from your route, you’ll have to pull over and try again. I’ve been using VZ Navigator since last February and it is absolutely amazing. It got me around the torturous LA freeway system with virtually no hassle and no time spent staring at my cup holder. I’d never get a BB unless it could duplicate the features of my cheap, otherwise crappy Motorola phone with its Verizon interface.

8320 (Curve with 3.2 MPixel Camera + WiFi) should be coming to TMobile around Sept 7. This was confirmed by multiple sources including TMobile rep. I wish I knew when Verizon’s 8330 is coming out…

I have a real job with real bills. I even have real kids to take care of. Having a real job with real bills does not mean that you don’t have $600 to spend on a real phone. Maybe you should quit complaining and get yourself a better job.
