PS3 to gain DVR support?

This is purely rumor status for the time being, but GameSpot UK seems to think there’s some truth in here. Sony’s head of New Zealand’s gaming division (say that one three times fast), Warwick Light, made some statements the other day hailing the almighty PS3 as being a "future proof" device (though he failed to address concerns that, according to sales numbers, the device may very well be "now proof" as well). Standard corporate posturing aside, Light made some interesting statements about future PS3 revisions. The gem of the bunch? "Sony hopes to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder." There ya go. There’s no further word or confirmation on specifics, but we can at least confirm that discussions about DVR capabilities are in the pipeline. Whether or not this move would boost sales is anyones guess, but it certainly can’t hurt things.

It would make it real popular if the harddrive size was easily (without voiding waranty) upgradeable so more content could be stored on the device.
well they have to do this to compete with the xbox. I think i remember in certain markets MS is using the xbox as a set top box and dvr. – I think its with ATT television if i remember. Im sure someone here will correct me about that.
I hope it’s in a software upgrade rather than having to buy a whole new system…i hope.
The DVR capabilities could easily be done with a software update. Except in cases of IPTV (a la the Xbox 360) a digital tuner would be a hardware upgrade (USB addon that you’d plug a coax cable into). Computers already have these external devices. So no you wouldn’t need to buy a new console. A bigger hard drive or external HDD would be a good deceision though.
has anyone heard anything about if hd dvd wins tha battle against blu-ray. will sony creat a patch so that the ps3 can read hd dvd?
Victor, if you are talking about the ps3 than yes you can upgrade the hdd without voiding the waranty in 2min… sony even tells you how on their site
