Yes and no. I have an unlocked T-Mo Dash I got from eBay and the phone does work but the whole data package has been crippled. According to AT&T rep, even though the phone is *technically* unlocked, there isn’t much that can be done for the way T-Mo set up Windows Mobile 6 for use specific to that phone on their network.

I was able to connect to WiFi once after considerable effort but not since. I keep getting an error message that the connection has been terminated by host.

Everything else works great but they cannot even get MediaNet or XMail to work on the phone to push e-mail.

My theory (and it is just my theory) is that carriers take Windows Mobile through some serious hoops that end up limiting the functionality of what should be there. Things are stripped out of it (WM) that can not be put back with an unlock code. Just my opinion.

My lesson, if you are going to buy an unlocked phone, get one straight from the manufacturer that HASN’T been through the carrier shenanigans. You’ll end up paying more, but at least you’ll know what you are buying will work pretty much as advertised as opposed to the secret “homebrew” carriers do.

Lifesavers!
I’ve searched on the internet and can’t come up with an answer. I really want to buy a (T-mobile) Dash and I am an AT&T customer. On eBay they sell them unlocked and the sellers say they work on AT&T. But my question is, do I have to buy a data plan? I would just use the internet and all the other cool stuff when I connect using WiFi, not any other time. So, do I have to buy a data plan just to get on WiFi? Thanks!

These reps are as reliable as a member of congress. I have seen, read and heard that September 21-25 is the window.

Spoke to an AT&T rep today, they stated the Q9 will not be launched for September and the new Launch date is early October

What happened to Black Berry 8820, most of the sites mentioned it will be released on September 4th, but 4th has come and gone, but ATT is really not opening their mouth on the release date, this is totally sucks! i will need to look for a better alternative, with unlocked BB8820

The price guide is for a 30 day window, it doesn’t mean the Q9 will come out that late, its just a range. Hopefully it will be out very soon because I want to beat my billing cycle at Verizon.

Sorry, I didn’t know you knew all of that already :S

I like my Tabletkiosk but if I had to do it all over again I would go for the Asus R2H which does have built-in GPS and a better processor. Both have superior inking than the other UMPCs which was the most important criteria in my selection.

If Asus has an upgrade to the R2H when I am ready to upgrade, I will be going in that direction so long as the inking experience is the same.

I’ve read countless reviews of the OQO2 but, aside from my PSP, I don’t want to go any lower than 7 inches on any screen. Others seem to love it though. Seems like a good device however, it is simply too small for my taste.

Being on AT&T, I was partial to the BlackJack because of the 3G but am using an unlocked Dash because of the WiFi capabilities which the BlackJack doesn’t have. The 8525 would be my choice (if it wasn’t for my Dash) since it has both 3G and WiFi.

@Aaron wow thanks for the info, sadly I knew most of what you said. My question then to you what is the best or benifit of the tabletkiosk, also considering the new ones are coming around the corner. Also what of the OQO2 any better, from what I know yes. So what good combination of UMPC and 3G would be a nice choice for (faster mobile communication) and then obviously a wifi(from the UMPC) and what of GPS?

It stands for Ultra Mobile PC. Microsoft suggested them about a year and a half ago with the code name of “Origami”.

Samsung built the first to market called the Q1 followed by Tabletkiosk with the v7110 (the model I have) both around March/April of 2006.

A UMPC (as classisfied by Microsoft at the time) is supposed to have a 7 inch touch screen running XP Tablet PC edition.

It is supposed to be a slate style mini tablet with NO keyboard. A keyboard can be added later by the user via USB or bluetooth but a UMPC was supposed to have nothing but navigation buttons (sounds like Microsoft agrees with Steve Jobs on buttons). All interactions are supposed to be done with either pen (digital ink) or touch. It was supposed to be light, easy to use, have all the core PC capabilities with Wifi built in.

A UMPC immediately appealed to Tablet PC users because of its smaller size, weight and ease of portability. That’s why I got one.

However, there are some tradeoffs. Battery life(without an extended battery) and processor speed/choice was/is nowhere near a standard laptop. With the new Santa Rosa chips coming, that should be changed.

The inking experience is inconsistent between UMPC makers. Some UMPCs favor touch and therefore have a terrible inking experience, while others went for a great inking experience and therefore have a terrible touch experience. None have gotten both right in one device yet.

And despite the success of the iPhone, at the time of the UMPC debut, most people couldn’t wrap their minds around using a device that relied primarily on touch.

What I get out of my UMPC is it’s small size, light weight and full tablet pc functionality as well as the ability to plug in a keyboard and mouse and have a “real” computer with most of the apps I use wherever I go.

There are a whole lot more pros and cons to the UMPC than I have space for and BGR doesn’t allow PMs so I hope that helps.

They havnt launched anything on time yet that I know of.(v3i-n75)I would rather have a z9 but will get the v9 when it arrives, unless all they offer is the maroon color. That would be a huge mistake as alot of guys would not buy it.

@Victor. Yeah, but the 8820 is a Blackberry. The phone is really nice, I played around with one at the AT&T store over the weekend. Still, the Blackberry isn’t for me. Most of its features would be useless to me (especially push e-mail) since I’m not running a Fortune 500 company.

Whereas,

I’ve got a UMPC and the Dash but I’ve sworn off anything from Nokia.

My UMPC and Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone work great together. My UMPC handles all the computer/internet/e-mail stuff while away from my desktop and syncs flawlessly with my Dash. I hear it is even better on Vista (I’m still on XP)

The 8820 is rumored to have wifi but in a weird way unless it has some new (software) features I still don’t know what device I will be upgrading to. Maybe an HTC Kraizer (if released soon) or maybe just a nice 3G phone and a nokia n800 or a UMPC and phone. So many decicions.
