Verizon Wireless buys Rural Cellular

In an attempt to decrease roaming costs, Verizon Wireless has just put pen to paper a deal that will buy out a company called Rural Cellular. The deal is for $2.7 billion, and they’re anticipating a savings of over $1 billion in roaming costs alone. In addition, their subscriber base could increase by 700,000 after the deal goes through. Look for the deal to close some time in the first half of 2008. We can’t wait.

Why did you bother reporting this information, yet you did report on At&t buying out Dobson Communications?
It’s pretty much the same situation, yet with At&t.
They’re saving almost 2.5 billion dollars on roaming (and other) charges with the buyout.
Did BGR write about this and I just missed the article? I couldn’t find it in the archives.

You may be interested to know that Verizon Wireless and Rural Cellular’s CEO’s are both directors at CTIA, which likely explains this deal. (See NewsVisual post: http://www.newsvisual.com/newsvisual/2007/07/verizonrural-ce.html )

JJ didn’t realize you felt so strongly about these types of things. Make sure you remind him about sprint and their buyout.

Wow Victor, I’m glad to see you’re just as interested in this topic field as I am! You seem to know quite a bit.
The point being is, I was simply curious as to why they had bothered to report this buyout, but not the At&t purchase. If you’d like to throw in Sprint, go ahead.
