SK Telecom to make a bid for Sprint/Nextel?

This folks, could be huge. SK Telecom, South Korea’s top wireless provider, has confirmed that they are in talks to acquire Sprint/Nextel. The specifics are somewhat unclear at this point, but SK’s plans are quite clear. With over 40 million Korean subscribers, a stake in China’s 2nd largest provider, and their hands in various other ventures throughout Asia, the company is now setting its sights on the American telecom business. There’s no word on just how much they expect to offer, or whether Sprint/Nextel is even on the auction block but, we have to assume that if their plans have progressed to the point of a public announcement, the talks are already in motion. And you thought Helio wasn’t gonna’ make it. Psh. We”ll keep ya posted as details roll in.

I can tell you that SK Telecom is an early implementer of WiBro service, and is active in the 802.16e standard. [Sprint's rollout of a WiMax service in the US is in work].

This may relate in the future of their Big Picture on what they have plans for…

When international bids for a company are in place everyone fears the outcome from outside companies moving in. I think it will make for better business, but that this deal has lots of if’s so as usual let’s wait and see.

With the recent speculation about Vodafone bidding for Verizon Wireless, by allowing SK to bid for Sprint, would this make it easier for Vodafone to make a case to the FCC?

    ******NEWS FLASH*********

The 3rd largest wireless company in the US is owned by a German company and if any of the reader ever had Voicestream, Powertell, Areil or Omnipoint the should all know the diffrents in service since T-mobile bought voicestream.

    T-mobile rocks

Side note if vodaphone picks up verizion it will be interesting see what comes from that since Verizion using CDMA and I know that Vodaphone is a strong GSM provider.

    1)At&t
    2)Verizon
    3)Sprint

Who did you think was third?

Vodafone will most likely not be “picking up” Verizon anytime soon. They have already shown great interest in getting rid of the the 40-something% stake they *already* own of the company.

    *** NEWS FLASH ***
It doesn’t matter that Vodafone has an interest in different wireless technologies (GSM/CDMA). Primarily because they are operated on different CONTINENTS.

It’s all about money. Technology is irrelevant. If they think they can make money (or gain something else) on a deal, they will do it. Look at Sprint. They are currently running CDMA, iDEN, and WiMAX (almost) networks. Though some might say they aren’t doing it very well…

I’m not sure why people care about where a company is based. Does it really matter to you where the CEO lives? The company will still pay US taxes and employ US workers. If people are so worried about Sprint being purchased by a foreign company then why aren’t you signing up for their service to strengthen their bottom line? Didn’t think so. My guess is people are more xenophobic than anything else. All those Wal*Mart buyers seemed to get over their problem with everything made in China when it meant they could get stuff cheaper.
