MySpace finds over 29,000 sex offenders, politicians freak

After agreeing to begin turning over alleged sex offenders with profiles on MySpace, the social-networking site is now reporting an estimate of 29,000 "known" profiles linked to the predators, up from a reported 7,000 in May. Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has been specifically outraged at this turn of events, stating, "I’m absolutely astonished and appalled because the number has grown so exponentially over so short of time with no explanation." Of course, questions are bound to be brought up. Examples? Why is everyone freaked that they’re actually finding more of these people? Isn’t that a good thing? And what made you think that out of the 180 million profiles on MySpace, that only 7,000 would be shady? Shame on you, arrogant people who barely know how to use the internet. Shame on you.

sigh, that’s the sad part about technology, BG, no one asks what the data really mean. 29,000 out of HOW many myspace profiles? How does that ratio compare to the overall population spread in the US? etc…

And yes, it is absolutely better to know who and where the sex offenders are! Silly government, learn your data analysis.

Its a sad day when the ad infested site is also infested with so many sex offenders, could be more could be less, in any case their needs to be a better way for people (law enforcement mostly) to limit their access to these types of sites and in general children.

So is this not going to be a “new phones” type site anymore?

I think the 29,000 number is pretty scary. You’d like to think there aren’t that many sick people out there. I think this just goes to show you how dangerous these social networks can be for young children. I know they were talking about making parental consent necessary for younger users, but I’m not sure that’s enough. I think parents need to be monitoring their kids. I know MySpace has a safety page to help parents and there are also sites out there like NetSmartz411.org to try and teach parents ways to monitor their children. With so many dangerous people out there on the ‘net, you can never be too careful.
