Microsoft confirms new Zune

…the five of you that just clapped can sit down now. A Microsoft PR rep has revealed that an updated model of the company’s oft-maligned DAP will be coming by years end. "We have seen the rumors floating around, but we haven’t announced specific dates or details for the next generation of the Zune devices or service. That said, Zune follows the cycle of the consumer electronics cycle so you can expect an update later this year prior to the holiday season. There are three predictable paths along which we’ll expand Zune." Three predictable paths, eh? Here they are, as per the rep’s prepared statement:

  • New sizes, styles, and price points
  • New features
  • New geographic markets

I guess this isn’t the rocket launcher-equipped Zune we’ve all been hoping for. Whatever the case, a new model can’t hurt the company’s attempts to make a dent in the market, but at the end of the day, they’re going to have to work very hard to make up the ground they’ve lost to Apple over the last month. Good luck, Redmond.

Yey now if they make it worth getting maybe then I will consider it a good thing. Sadly my DAP (zen vision:m) has not been getting the developing time it should. Maybe a slimmer or even higher capacity version, and no 60gb doesn’t count.

not going to replace my 30gb ipod. I’m hooked and cant see losing or ripping all my itunes music. Also, i’m interested to see if the next one looks as bad as the first. I know looks shouldnt matter but it looks like a brick.

changes are good though, hopefully they compete with apple to get them both creating better devices.

I read about this new Zune. Isn’t it really a disguise case that fits over the Apple ipod, so no one will steal it.

The current Zune is ugly. The new Zune needs a new resolution screen for it to sell well.

I love my Zune, never liked iPod much. Zune works really well, it’s not a brick, it’s a fair size considering the gorgeous display. I look forward to the next wave, as I will surely be buying another.

I’m so hyped about the new zune, I probably won’t drop the extra money to get it. Maybe I can arrange to have mine “accidentally dropped in the toilet” or something as an excuse to get a new one. :)
