New PS3 160GB external hard drive about to hit the market
Come August, Hori will be releasing a new 160GB external hard drive for the PS3, removing any need to worry about whether your 20-60 80GB has enough room for your goodies. It’s USB powered, which means no external power supply…good for those of you who are cord-conscious. Look for the retail price to hover around $240, and then realize that the extra dough will only get you some potential PS3 badging, and otherwise, is just another regular 160GB drive that you could purchase, well, now. For less. But you never know…there are definitely people who prefer to buy things that are "designed" for their OEM gear.

Does anyone know if there is already an external that does this? I saw the executioner post on engadget and I am curious about what can be done?

There are numerous external hard drives already on the market that will do the job just fine, and for a lot less money than this.
In the UK I can go to any PC World and pick up a Maxtor drive that doesn’t need extra power for around £70 for 160Gb.
I can also buy a SATA 5400rpm 2.5″ internal drive for about the same and upgrade my PS3 without invalidating the warranty - Sony made the internal drive upgradeable.
All you have to do is make sure you format the drive using the PS3 or using FAT32 on your PC - the PS3 won’t recognise NTFS drives.

why wouldnt you just swap in a new internal HDD? isnt it pretty much plug-n-play? wasnt that one of the main avantages for the PS3?
