Is the HTC Kaiser coming to the US real soon?
Now that the so-called "Jesus Phone" has landed with AT&T, people have wondered if there is still a place in the world for the HTC Kaiser. According to one site, the answer is an unqualified "Yes."
They claim that the HTC Kaiser will be coming to AT&T as the 8925, keeping the same model number scheme as previous HTC Windows Mobile devices. For those who have been living under a rock, the 8925 will sport a sliding, tilting keypad, 3MP camera with auto-focus, and built-in GPS. Of course, it’ll take advantage of AT&T’s 3G network, and comes loaded with 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM.
Where current Windows Mobile 6 devices are finding that 64MB of RAM is quickly eaten up by the OS and memory leaks in applications, 128MB should be plenty. Further, the phone’s faster data and advanced features could lure away potential iPhone subscribers when they can finally see that there is a lot more value to be had for the money. Or not.No one ever said that the iPhone was a rational purchase.
So when can you find the 8925? "Supposedly the Cingular 8925 will be available in August 2007", but I’d recommend taking that date with a hefty pull on a salt lick. It’s unlikely AT&T would be willing to slow the momentum of the iPhone by launching the 8925 so close.

I know that it may be hard for the 8925 to launch so soon after the iPhone, but I hope that it is true. I love the iPhone, but there is always room for a little competition. Besides this will get all the iPhone haters to come into my store and buy a device. Although I think it will be the AT&T 8925, not the Cingular 8925.

When I was working on my little iPhone launch story, I interviewed Tom Norman, the director of sales and operations for the Pacific Northwest region for at&t mobility.
We got to talking about my phone geekness and I told him I heard of a new HTC phone in the pipeline for at&t.
He told me the HTC Tilt (that’s what he called it) was due for launch in September.
Take it for what it’s worth.

Yes finally a phone worth upgrading to. I love the BB but if I can get this baby I will so much more happier. Now let’s see how they pull this one out. Maybe BG can raffle this one off too.
also any signs of the wifi being cut or is it going to keep the same specs as with HTC?

I’m am truly happy to hear this news for the non-iPhone loving crowd here on BGR. Now everyone can have the newest toy of their choosing and no more hating. I’m sure someone will come up with HTC Kaiser vs iPhone though.

I have an 8525 and an iPhone, and I can honestly say there is no comparison. I am definitely not a fan of Microsoft (Windows Mobile 5-just D/L’d the HTC Hermes WM6 upgrade)but having said that, the phone is fantastic! It is so much better in it’s ability to do EVERYTHING that the iPhone comes off as a very pretty but very stupid cousin. As a matter of fact I am planning on taking the iPhone back later today-bought it four days ago. It is just not worth the money when compared to an 8525 or (I will bet, it’s successor, the Kaiser.)

It’s great news that the well-featured HTC Kaiser will be released in the U.S. soon … but … it’s unfortunate that it will be sold with the sub-par AT&T network.
Anyone heard any news of any other GSM carriers also getting it? Or news of a CDMA version being released at some point?

I don’t really see the iphone and the Kaiser competing.
It’s clear the iphone is not an enthusiast device, just a toy for the rich that is fairly light on actual substance, as most of us have read in reviews.
The Kaiser is the real deal and competes in a different space than the iphone. Yes, both are expensive (the Kaiser will probably cost less with a 2-year contract), but it doesn’t appeal to tweens with wealthy parents and the apple “elite” because it’s not trendy and isn’t really a status symbol.
(awaiting downard thumbs and haters)

iPhone forever!!!!
lol, i agree with the comments here, it is in a different league than the iphone, but i dont agree that the iphone is for kids with rich parents and apple fanboys. The iPhone is for people who want their music with them everywere they go and to have videos and stuff with an easy to use interface. The 8525 and the 8925 devices are ore for business users that want more productivity and less multimedia. I am so pleased with my iphone however, i wouldnt trade it for this any day.

Sigh…
Perhaps you’ve never heard of TCPMP…it can play any file itunes can plus many more.
And with the $400 I save on buying an 8525 instead of an iphone, I can spend ~$150 of that on micro SD cards and some more on a capable GPS unit that can do things Google maps only dreams of. Offer a better browser in Opera and -real- email support and it’s really no contest.

HTC Kaiser= Godly. Does anyone know if it’ll ship with the 2nd camera?

Yeah, it should ship direct from HTC that way, but I would not be surprised if the carriers (hopefully AT&T) will remove it.
Oh yeah, also forgot to mention the iphone has no 3G.
No 3G on the iphone.
How could people have honestly taken it seriously?

I’ve had the chance to use the Kaiser, and the only negative I could find was that it was probably designed for lefties…
From the simple act of sliding the keyboard (slides to the left as opposed to the 8525 which slid from the right), and the camera screen which makes you flip the whole device upside down to get the right orientation.
Opera appears to have been included (but still not as sweet as the iPhone browser). Best feature is the 3G tethering (the inet sharing via bluetooth/USB is slick).

I truly don’t think that the iPhone is a rational purchase because you are paying $600+ for something with a shitty screen, no 3G, and a 50mhz processor when you could get the Kaiser for most likely the same price and it has a boatload of more, and better, features on it. Plus with this keyboard you might be able to use it like a real keyboard, you know two fingers and all rather than the more common two thumbed approached.
But hey it’s all in how stupid you feel with using your money.

Want to make it clear up front that I am not a “fanboy” of any company. I just like great gadgets. I think the iPHONE has been great in the sense that it has expanded interest in gadgets and will hopefully spur manufacturers to “think out of the box”. Having said that, the misconception about the 8525 being a “business” phone is incorrect. It has stereo bluetooth-iPhone does not, 2mp camera with a video cam to boot-the iPhone does not.
It literally is a computer in your pocket. A computer that you can listen to wireless tunes, take pictures, shoot video, edit word documents, use as a high speed modem for your laptop, oh, and yeah make phone calls…….it really is an incredible device and I can’t wait for the Kaiser-which should hopefully make an already fantastic device even better…….wow.

It would be stupid for AT&T to release Kaiser so soon after they release iPhone. Given the choice and time to think, I suspect quite a few iPhone customers may ask for refund and get the Kaiser instead. If I were AT&T CEO, I would delay Kaiser as much as I could.

I disagree. As pointed out, the buyers of the iPhone aren’t rational buyers. The iPhone was released while the AT&T 8525 was out, which, imho, is a better device offering a touch screen, 2MP camera, and WiFi in addition to things the iPhone doesn’t have like a tactile QWERTY keyboard and some 3g loving. These two devices target different audiences and I doubt that its release would harm Apple or AT&T.

The iPhone has the beauty with its impeccably thin design (which was NOT underscored enough), but this HTC family has the brains. When was the last time you’ve heard anyone wanting his miracle date to be Marie Curie when Beyonce’s at the next table? But are awesome, but Apple/AT&T has nothing to lose with a summer launch.

Can’t remember when the 8525 was launched. Was it less than a year ago? AT&T might want to try and make as much money off the 8525 stock before launching this one.
