NYC trying to add 3000 cameras to charge you for driving and fight terror

Big Brother, where art thou? New on lower Manhattan’s plate is the possible addition of 3000 cameras, positioned strategically to view all of NYC’s major financial district, including Wall Street and the soon-to-be-reconstructed World Trade Center towers. The aim is to protect a major resource in US: "This area is very critical to the economic lifeblood of this nation," The New York Times quoted the city’s Police Commissioner Ray Kelly as saying. "We want to make it less vulnerable." In addition to "protecting" us, Mayor Bloomberg also wants to use the cameras to read license plates and charge $6 a day to, uh, drive there. As if it wasn’t expensive enough to live in NYC, now you get to budget another $180/month to drive through part of it. Lovely.

Cars are evil. They should be banned in the first place. Only delivery and necessary vehicles should be allowed. The city would be soo much nicer!

I moved into Manhattan in 1999 and sold my car in 2001. The cameras need to be used for crime and should be on many corners recording. Just their presence alone helps prevent things from happening.

As for driving in and paying, I guess it is expensive but there are too many cars here. Don’t they have this somewhere in London and it works well? That’s what I have heard.

@ Mark – They have something else like London not just the toll. They got cameras almost anywhere. While privacy is always a issue, that’s how they caught those terrorist doctors so quick. Just retrace their steps. While I’m not 100% for it, it is innevitable(sp?) eventually everything we do will he recorded. Damn terrorists I wish they would kill them all :/

The whole terrorist thing is understandable….But the 6 bucks per day to drive through in addition to high gas prices is not cool.

This will be another reason why Bloomberg is a billionaire.

Bloomberg is not living in reality. He is so rich that to someone like him, the six bux wont make a differance. Besides… he wont have to pay that anyway. I dont live in the city. If I wanna go to the village, I gotta pay a 6 dollar toll at the bridge and then another 6 bux to get down there. Effin retarded. Bloomberg should get in touch with the citizens of NY. not charge them money.

Unless you need a vehicle to do your work, You clowns complaining about toll/gas prices shouldn’t be driving into the city to begin with. Especially w/ mass transit being able to take you to virtually any point in the city and the outer boroughs. And there are park and rides and trains for you LI, NJ, and Westchester/CT peeps.
