New see-thru LCD screen wins WTF award

We don’t know if there really is a WTF award. But there should be. And this would win it. It’s a new technology from Active, Inc. that creates an LCD screen via crystal optical film and allows you see through it while viewing the image on screen. No amount of brainstorming among BGR staffers has yielded an idea as to what this could practically be used for, especially at the consumer level, so we’re open to suggestions. This is assuming, of course, that you can get past the creepy press photo (above).

if its a film than it can be applied anywhere not just on glass although that has retail storefront advertising in my mind.

Wonder if they can layer them so one layer can become opaque and one will have a picture?

It can be used as a heads up display (HUD), in cars for example.

Maybe it’s the first step to windshield GPS systems. But how many people are talented enough to focus on what’s on the road and what’s on their windsheild at the same time?

Yup, it would be perfect for a heads up display, especially in a car or plane.

Yeah but anything in the background would make it more difficult to see the image on the screen. It has to be worse than trying to read your email on your cell phone in direct sunlight.

I for one would KILL for a head-up display inside my motorcycle helmet made of this stuff.

Not for crap like GPS – stuff like RPM, speed, gear (most bikes have six forward, and sometimes its hard to figure out if your in 3/4/5), trip (most bikes have

A couple ideas… how about that interface device from the movie “Red Planet” – where you get an overlay of your actual surroundings with additional data.

But for something a bit less sci-fi, a two-way television screen in interrogation rooms? Or couple it with a liquid-crystal window opacity and you could do board room display screen on the board room windows.

only function I can see this for: you know how some ppl have fireplaces or fishtanks that can are built in to walls. I can see this forming the same fashion. The only problem would be once you enter the next room, everything would be in reverse. Now if they create a button to flip image from right to left. I could see this new technology serving a purpose. (Why can i see some somebody on MTV cribs having this)

It could be used for vehicle info and entertainment like you guys said, and also as someone else said store window ads

I could imagin it being used in the packaging of expensive products

Also its just a concept representation, they will think of things to use it for

I agree with all the above… Its similar to the Heads Up Display in BMWs… With the big exception the Heads Up Display has a purpose… Why I want a big see thru screen thats more ways your wife can distract you during a game… This was probably a female’s invention… J/K! This would be nice if it projected on the front of your frig so you wouldn’t have to open it to see what you want…
