Amazon/Microsoft backs HD-DVD indie film project
It could be a great step for both indie film producers. Not totally conviced that it’s a great step for HD-DVD, though. Amazon and Microsoft have teamed up to create the 1,000 HD-DVD Indies Project, encouraging indie film folk to submit their HD projects for possible HD-DVD distribution through CustomFlix (part of Amazon). CustomFlix is a DVD On-Demand company that only produces DVDs as they’re ordered, rather than mass-producing discs that could never get sold. While generating some awareness of the NexGen format, and helping independent film creators get more exposure (which they need all they can get), this hardly seems like a win for HD-DVD as a format. Especially when big-ole-Blockbuster has already abandoned it as their primary choice.

This could help them but not enough to make it the only HD format. Make it so anyone can download or buy an on-demand HD-Movie from any library and you will see that grow.
