Sprint leaves Nextel behind

What the heck is it with cellular  companies merging, changing names, re-changing names, and changing names again? AT&T, we’re looking in your direction. The latest culprit is Sprint Nextel. The two companies merged in 2005, combined logos, stores, and essentially operated as a single carrier. They continued to function autonomously when it came to actual equipment and networks, but from a marketing perspective, they were the same entity. It seems, however, that Sprint hasn’t benefited as much from their association with the Chirp-Chirpers as they expected, opting to leave Nextel out of their new marketing campaign. Sprint has also removed any reference to Nextel from their uber-popular NASCAR sponsorship logos.  Sprint is certainly the least savvy of the large carriers, but this move sounds like a good one. And no, don’t worry (or rejoice), Nextel isn’t going anywhere. At least not yet…

They needed to make this happen back in 2005. They really have to get on the stick and get it together. They have lost $200K in quality billings over the last quarter while gaining only 600K new subscribers. This is way behind the big two. The time is now for Sprint, can they answer the bell? From a competitive stand point for all of us regardless of carrier they must answer the bell.

It was a bad idea snatching up Nextel in the first place IMO. They lost instead of gaining, they should of spent that money on their network or even getting REV. A or 4G out the door before anyone else. Or even snatch Alltel when it went on sale…Just my 2cents.

In terms of DATA/MESSAGING who beats them? I mean TMO is cheap but EVDO-A vs EDGE? if they combine their quality DATA-CENTRIC network w/ cheap voice packages , new marketing… they are gonna become the… you know.

Sprint will be fine. I just hope they keep their new logo, this red ball is ugly. I think what has been hurting Sprint is their phone lineup. Sprint needs help with their high end phones.

That is truly where they lack. Then need to get the curve in the family and get better WM6 phones. That will be a good step in the right direction. They are introducing a couple of phone in July in the mid range. Both are Sanyo phones. One is a replacement to the Katana and the other will take advantage of the EV-DO Rev A network. I think the date is July 15th the same date as the BB 8830 worldphone.

Sprint burned their bridge in the begining when they blew-off Motorola and got in bed with Qualcom. Now they go and buy Nextel, with a 13% Motorola ownership, and they expect M to play buddy-buddy? I’m not surprised at all M has left ‘em hangin’ out to dry. They can’t manage the iDen backbone, and Motorola’s got no interest in putting up with the crap… Karma comes around.
